Yes, pretty insane. It shows how the stock exchange has completely lost contact with reality. At a time where Tesla has lost its leadership position in its market, has only two aging cash cow models on the market, is in the process of losing the most important global EV market to domestic competition and has no credible other big business model, the stock is rising to heights as high as many of its competitors combined with a lot higher sales, revenues and profits (combined). It is all based on flowery promises of the future.

This can go on for quite a while longer but eventually reality always wins.

It’d be nice to see tsla valued properly. I’d also like to see a European competitor to starlink.

Tanking starlink is a bit of a head scratcher. Cutting off access with that timing seems really boneheaded and short sighted. It had a real chance to be a super surveillance internet 2.0 with constant expensive upkeep.

Yes, I would like them to go out of business too. It would also be great to destroy the regulatory capture that blocks much better cars from USA.

Tesla drivers I see fall into 3 categories:

    • 2017 or older: fair enough, and credit for moving to EVs so early!
    • 2018-2023: er, Elon seems like kind of a twat. Are you sure? The whole Thai cave thing? But, you know, some benefit of the doubt.
    • 2024+: You are supporting a literal Nazi.

Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Polestar, Porsche all have EVs that match or even beat Tesla’s offering outside of Full Self Driving and sentry mode. I recently saw a youtube video of a Chinese EV that navigated Amsterdam on it’s own. https://youtu.be/egs_P0bO2AE So yeah Tesla won’t have the monopoly on full self driving for long.

That is not quite true though. While they indeed still make (2) good car models there are alternatives on the market that can rival them (eg Kia EV4 or Renault Scenic E-tech 89kWh) and those alternatives can do so while actually having real buttons, that you don’t have to take off the eyes from the road just because you want to adjust the A/C or whatever. If you really wanted to leave Tesla, you could. That said, I don’t see the point in selling a perfectly good car in working condition for such reasons. What difference does it make if someone else is driving it and if no one is driving it it is a waste of resources.

The lack of real buttons is hardly the problem with those vehicles. Maybe for some/many people but I find that argument excessively nit-picky. You can adjust temperature perfectly fine in a Tesla without looking. Not that I normally need to touch it at all.

That argument carries enough weight that EURONCAP safety rating requires physical buttons for key features:

"Under the Safe Driving section of Euro NCAP’s safety rating, the key driving controls – indicators, windscreen wipers and washer, hazard warning lights, horn and eCall emergency button – should be operated by a direct physical input rather than hidden within a menu on a touchscreen. "

            https://www.euroncap.com/press-media/buttons-are-back-for-basic-functions-euro-ncap-confirms-in-testing/

The “it doesn’t effect me” crowd is of the same kind that says, that controlling a phone during driving, doesn’t effect them or that they can drive just as safe after non-excessive alcohol consumption.

I bought my Tesla in 2022. After 4 years with it, the lack of real buttons and burying controls under touchscreen menus is the primary reason why I’ll never buy another Tesla. When I do replace my Tesla it will be with another EV, but not a Tesla EV.

It seems Chinese vendours are almost as bad as Tesla in this regard. However, European (maybe also South Koreans, I don’t know) largely coming back to physical controls for key features (and also real haptic buttons, not cheapo-touch buttons) though.

When’s the last time you looked? Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, BMW i4, Xpeng G6 for example come to mind. Bonus: they’re on an 800V platform so loading from 10% - 80% is like 14 minutes compared to ~25 minutes for a model 3

You didn’t specify the model we should compare. But model y is beaten by multiple German and Chinese models like cla, glb, ix3, xpeng g6 and smart #5 just to name a few.

To add what I mean with beat is faster charging, HUD, better drive train etc.

Chinese manufactures are making cars that literally jump over potholes… And I think they’re in production.

Whereas, Elon demos something that will never go to production, is totally useless, and is basically a falling car…

Yeah, Active Suspension. Unfortunately, never went to production though, apparently because of complexity I think.

The BYD is in production though

China is living in the future, and the best that Elon can do is a shitty demo that would blow you up in a car crash, and which will never be feasible to produce.

Guess which one got attention though?

            And the boot doesn’t leak.

I’ve been looking at EVs, and at least here in Australia, I can’t see any legit reasons to pick a Tesla over byd at the moment

My biggest issue though with both is that neither offer a ev designed for 4wd /rough terrain yet (which is why I’m looking trailseeker).

However, it’s more likely byd will get there first.

And yeah, I’m not waiting for this stupid once off flying car thing as an alternative. It was never intended to be production and would never work in a production car (it’s like elons “hyperloop”, yet another overpromise underdeliver)

I quite appreciate the visceral dislike that people have for Tesla. Given that we see their products directly in our everyday lives, I certainly don’t blame people for reacting this way, and I’m happy to encourage this sort of scrutiny, especially over the longer term. I sometimes think, though, that the zeitgeist is missing some of the deeper damage that Musk’s enterprises are inflicting. I don’t think there’s nearly enough journalism about the ongoing effects of DOGE cuts, for example.

And then there’s SpaceX. In all the anger over the throttling of Starlink (“Starshield”) for the defenders in Ukraine, I haven’t seen a single note of awareness about Starlink and LEO satellite megaconstellations being inherently harmful (regardless of who launches them). Aside from the increased orbital collision risk, the atmospheric pollution, and the blinding of astronomical facilities (including asteroid defense), there’s the threat to the ozone layer from all that reentering aluminum. All of which will only increase as lunatics continue to use near-orbital space as their dumping ground.

It’s a powerful metaphor for our time. When it comes to Tesla, I think there’s a good company in there, somewhere. And SpaceX absolutely employs some of the best aerospace talent on the planet, capable of advancing legitimate science and exploration in space. And yet, so many brilliant folk are caught up employing their skills in juvenile displays like flying car stunts and planet-encircling rings of disposable satellites.

We are so upset about specific evil things that Musk or his companies do that we miss to be upset about all their other failings. Well said. His whole empire should collapse, and if that means that “we” can only launch 100x per year instead if 1000 times, that’s a price we can very well pay.

Eh, it could’ve been but on the other hand, the design is plausible. Stupid, but plausible.

Basically a space craft lander themed as a car.

Note that even by Tesla standards, they said no one could even ask for that car and that car would never be street legal. They did send have waving around whether the limited mid tier car would be street legal by saying it was contingent on your local regulations for thrusters on cars, which is a long way to say it wont be street legal either.

Even though they say the lowest end will be street legal, that active down force system says otherwise.

But a promised production date in 2 years in Tesla time means we went be seeing it for a long time, if ever.

It’s kinda funny how child-like Elon is. That’s a fantasy literally everyone stuck in traffic has had. He is good at grabbing people’s attention with stunts like this (or maybe someone he surrounds himself with and just takes the credit for). I don’t think it’s enough anymore ever since the DOGE stuff. I personally would never willingly spend a single penny that I thought would end up in his pocket.

As soon as I saw this thing boost forward using rocket thrust both my bf and I said “if this is ever on the road everyone near this thing dies.”

Because some fucking brain dead idiot is going to rocket boost, kill himself from the speed, everyone behind him from the backblast, and everyone in front of him from the giant expensive bullet that was just created.

This is never going to get on the roads, and if it does, it’ll be only for police and military, if it’s not relegated to an expensive toy for the ultra rich they can’t even drive on the road.
