I just got a ban for “encouraging violence”. Someone asked “what will you do to celebrate when he dies?” Someone else started talking about how they have a fantasy about getting the death note and how they’d put that to use. I chimed in with my silly fantasy of using a seance to end politicians’ careers by getting them possessed by the ghost of GG Allin, and enjoying the mayhem that would ensue.
So, anyway, right after that, I found out that all the people who were so transgressive to have actually liked that comment of mine can, as of a couple days ago, expect punishment as well. How draconian.
And so that was that. No sense in being lorded over on the internet by the same people who run HOAs. It’ll be fun watching Reddit flush itself down the toilet from over here, I expect.
forgot my old login to here so made a new one, but my reddit got banned for 3 days for “violent threats” after talking about Luigi in r/europe.
reddit chose their side. goodbye reddit and twitter, hello Lemmy and Bluesky.
It’s important to recognize that these changes to reddit, like inserting more ads, banning subreddits, shutting down the public API and excessive restriction of expression around Luigi, are partly a result of pressure from the people who own reddit, the financial backers, who are the kind of owning-class mega-rich who are threatened by the idea of Luigi.
BlueSky is also ultimately beholden to venture capitalists, it’s only a matter of time before they must start making back that money by appeasing the owner class and following their demands. So, like others have recommended, I recommend trying to find a good Mastodon site if there’s one that suits you. Just like Lemmy, it’s a federated group of sites which can share content with each other.
oh its been fun, yeah
i love seeing spez fuck himself into a corner
I don’t want to see that.
i turned myself into a corner, morty
I understand that there are laws against violent speech online so the platforms have their hands tied in some ways, but they are completely fucking stupid. We need to get rid of them entirely. People are just going to say “luigi them,” instead of “kill them,” then “luigi” will become a banned keyword, it will get replaced with something else and so on forever. Especially when your country is at war, there is no way to talk about reality without talking about violence. And violence is justified in self defense. These laws are the product of some soy ass peace time virtue signalers and need to be immediately overturned so that people can begin organizing an insurgency for when the yanks invade.
I came here when all the API drama happened, and I didn’t even use third party apps, I just decided that I didn’t want to help make that greedy little pig boy any money. Even still, I’m actually shocked that they’ve cracked down this hard. It’s hard to take serious, because it seems like they would destroy their userbase with this, but they’re doing it.
I also came here when all the API drama happened. I also checked out Sqabblr, which had a different name at first. There wasn’t much here and I was confused by the fediverse. I went on Facebook and that was a hot mess of garbage.
I went back to Reddit recently and it’s noticeably worse - probably a combination of chasing away great mods and our world just being what it is makes for people being awful at each other rather than at problems.
I’ve just come back here this weekend and there seems to be more resources to help me understand the nature of the fediverse. Ideally I won’t be back to Reddit.
Sorry to ramble, hope you have a great week!
Squabblr’s the one where the owner wuickly outed himself as a right-wing transphobe and caused a mass-exodus of early adopters, wasn’t it?
If that happened I missed it. There was never much traffic so I rarely checked it. The participants never came off as intolerant.
Yeah, the vibe was definitely left-wing before, and it was a shock to many of the more prominent members. You started getting the appearance of subs which were “this is to discuss how Jews control all the money globally” and prominent members who avoided saying anything completely explicit on the site, but whose twitter accounts would reveal them to be prominent members of swastika-using Nazi groups.
The owner declared himself to be “a free speech absolutist” and that he wanted to promote conflict on the site and a lot of people, myself included, just went “yeah, I see where this is going” and left.
That’s crazy. I haven’t been able to log in recently but it sounds like I’m still not missing anything worth experiencing.
I’ve no idea if they’ve changed course again. I went there out of curiosity after this post but it’s all hidden behind a log in screen and i couldn’t be arsed to sign up or try to remember or find my credentials.
But since you don’t really want to hide your content if you’re small and trying to grow, I’m going to assume that it’s insular and doesn’t want people to stumble on its content.
You did god’s work being here this whole time. Thanks.
I came when Apollo died. Found Voyager and stayed.
Same. Apollo was one of the best third-party apps of any kind that I’ve ever used. F
I recently discovered Lemmy, and Voyager reminds me of the good Apollo times.
Finally jumped ship after I had a third account banned.
same same. tired of being banned for borderline comments.
I have to say, that is one hilariously fantastic way to wish ill on a group of people.
Welcome to Lemmy!
HOA’s are communism for libertarians. I think the comparison is apt.
…I don’t see how that makes sense. What’s communist or socialist about an HOA? If anything, HOAs are capitalists trying to force property values to increase by using crappy anti-social laws.
Incidentally, communism for libertarians might be libertarian socialism or anarcho-communism, which both predate the US right-wing Libertarian ideology and instead actually focus on everyone’s liberty.
Hello, fellow redfugees
I switched over and am permanently deleting my accounts. Be sure to do that, and don’t just stop using it. They’ll really only start to feel it when a bunch of 10+ year accounts start deleting, since they can’t waive it away as “consumer fickleness” that will swing back around
i just deleted my 9+ year old account.
I did that when I moved to Lemmy last year. The more recent account I just deleted was mostly comments “inciting violence” and encouraging people to move to Lemmy, so they are welcome to keep those.
Don’t just delete accounts, delete all your posts first. There’s multiple 3rd party tools to do it since Reddit only lets you do 1 at a time manually
There was r/YSK post that got me here. I’m not going back to reddit.
Me too! I’m old and a little lost and confused, but I’m enjoying doddering around here so far.
Welcome to Lemmy, be sure to build your own subscription and block list. The updoots dont tally on your account (which I think is one of the healthiest changes), speak your mind, each comment stands on its own, and bad takes are not forever (Ive had my own fair share). If you dont like your mods, change instances or make your own.
May the Lord Flying Spaghetti Monster keep you and protect you, good sir.
I just joined a little while ago, there are blocklists here?
Also if you dont mind me asking, can you switch instances without creating a new account?
I use Jerboa as my app and in its UI you select the 3 dots icon and select “Block”, it then prompts if you want to block the instance or user who made the post.
As for switching instances, not at this time. Its a feature thats been requested, but is complicated to implement (stay tuned). On that topic, as stated above, there is no vote total, so other than moving your saved posts there is no reason to be sentimental about your account. Just abandon it and make one on an instance with admins you agree with.
Yeah, I’ve gone through and did a bunch of subscribing and a little bit of blocking a handful of instances I know will flood my feed with stuff I find creepy. I actually spent a couple days deciding on the right instance to join. I’m looking forward to more people showing up, and it’s nice that everyone I’ve interacted with so far has been pretty chill.
This is the first time I’m seeing the retrolemmy.com server… neat! Welcome to the Fediverse (Threadiverse)!
We’ve been around for about 1,5 years. But recently we finally had enough active users to get on the join-lemmy.org homepage. Things got exponentially (and positively) wild since then.
Welcome! I’m full of shamefully bad takes I’ve not even uncovered yet, but I’ll continue to do what it takes to proffer then without bias or foreknowledge of their shitty values. 😅 Let’s be human together, fellow citizen. 🙃
Bad takes are forever here. It’s something I hate. Sometimes I’ll comment on something and then end up deleting it because I just don’t wanna get into it but it only deletes on your instance. I’ll still get replies from everyone who can still see it.
Also is it still stupidly complicated to delete pics here?
The point is that because there is no vote tally you just have to assume everyone is a normal person, there is no scarlet letter on your account by having -2500 votes, you, the readers have to put in the effort to judge someone (or determine if they are a bot). Except for your accounts home instance, there is no badge that says someone posts to hexbear or someplace that is a bit off.
It does delete and propagate to other instances, but the process is not immediate. There can be some delay. I’ve had replies to deleted comments coming hours later if my instance was running behind.
Am I completely out of touch?
I’ll still get replies from everyone who can still see it.
That might be an instance thing, sometimes instances are slow to update other instances, see my other comment for example.
You’re federated when you post here. There are definitely instances that are a bunch of nazis, a bunch of instances that are really dumb, and more. It’s the internet. Everything you post is there forever. I like my instance, because it’s the best I’ve found. Finding and identifying your home instance is more important than blocking users and communities. That will be the next step. Welcome human!
I’m not sure I fully understand the instance thing. Example, I’m on Lemmy world now. What kind of thing should change if I change instances?
Don’t forget to leave a bad review on how bad the app features and performance is.
Came here after the moderation tool censoring of ‘eat the rich’ and ‘Luigi’. That’s some billionaire protective bs.
Reddit Refugee here. Got my last “permanent” ban from that place. No idea why, don’t care. Greener pastures, I hope.
Keep in mind, a couple of instances including lemmy.world have removed what they consider calls to violence when it comes to Luigi. So general support will be fine, but if you ever end up crossing a line, remember that there are plenty of other instances which allow you to say: Brian Thompson had it coming, kill the billionaires, hang Musk in the town square, and the only thing wrong with doing a Luigi is that random acts of terror against the owner class just aren’t sustainable (see Propaganda of the Deed assassinations in the late 1800s/1900s), you need an organized movement to support this kind of action.
Several specific lemmy communities have taken action against anti billionaire posts. I’ve since blocked those communities.
Yeah. I’ve definitely has comments censored, but only in .world.
Reasons:-
- Politeness
- Civility
- Propo
I was also banned there for refusing to get into an argument with a Mod.
At this point I consider .world to be Reddit-lite
Today is Green MAR 10.
tadaaaa, here I am :)
I got banned for suggesting that maybe all the conservatives young men (the “alpha male types”) should be sent to an island where they can fight in an artificial, made up war against each other and then when they return home they’ll be progressives.
LOL. I was just making a point that people who call for wars are often the ones who have never fought in one. Oh well. Getting banned from Reddit is probably for the best, I should be supporting Canadian services anyway.
Good idea. We can dedicate a small island where all ‘Alpha males’ fight against each other every year. The winner is the true Alpha
You could get at least 56 manga chapters out of this concept
You kidding? This is a whole light novel!
“I Entered An Alpha Male Contest And Now I’m Trapped On An Island In A Battle Royale??”
