President signed the legislation championed by late senator Lindsey Graham last month but has waived the restrictions as they were due to come into effect

Maybe “the West” no longer exists. There’s just the US and then there’s Europe, and each of them is doing their own thing.

I hate that everyone is just letting this guy walk all over the constitution. At any time they could stop him, but they don’t want too no matter how much they say they do.

They created this monster, and they are stuck with the consequences regardless of whether they want it or not. Obligatory fuck neoliberals too, and Gavin Newsom in particular.

Woah now, are you seriously asking Congress to do their job and govern? When they can just sit around and collect all that sweet bribe lobby money. They want this executive fiat to make their lives easier. The whole government has been heading this way for a long time.

They created this monster and we are stuck with the consequences.

Yeah, well, he just backed a measure to kill the billionaire tax in California, and took it a step further trying to make it illegal to make other billionaire taxes. Fuck that guy, if he makes it to the general election, I will vote for him, but I will not forget that he’s a billionaire stooges.

We need real progressives, not fucking neoliberals in sheep’s skin, or we will get Trump 2.0 one day and it will be even worse than it is now. People want real change, not another Joe Biden, or Obama.

We got MAGA because people are ignoring the working people’s plight, and acting like the world is all hunky dory, and we aren’t killing the planet under a capitalist system rigged against anybody not rich.

But, I will hold my nose and vote for him if he makes it to the general bcz I’d rather not go full Hitler. We already might get that. 🤷‍♂️

I think I read some time ago that Newsom’s argument is that a national billionaire tax would be better and more effective than a California billionaire tax.

But yeah maybe he should just support both: a California tax and a national tax.

It is pretty obscene that billionaires can spend nearly limitless money trying to defeat a proposal for them to pay just a little bit more in tax; a tax which could save the lives of the most disadvantaged people in society.

Yeah, well, too little too late. He also passed a ban on 3D printing. I don’t remember the specifics of it, but it was something to do with ghost guns, but we all know the real purpose is to prevent people from making replacement parts for their stuff. Right to repair is so fucked, and he’s made it worse for no reason.

There are a lot of reasons to hate the guy even though he’s done some decent stuff.

I don’t just blindly support candidates, and I never will. I want a Mamdani to run for president, and congress. We need people who actually care. Not people who just want power. The entire world is lurching right now bcz of the manipulated online discourse, and our idiot neoliberal polices from the past 40-50 years. It’s like clock work, the generation that experienced fascism dies, so we decided, maybe let’s try it again. Maybe it’ll work this time.

Fair points. I’m British not American, so I’m sure you know a lot more about Newsom than I do. I’ve seen a couple of interviews with him but that’s about it.

If 2028 is Newsom vs Vance and Newsom wins, I would hope that would improve the world. Maybe a Democrat who more boldly stands up for ordinary (non-wealthy) people would be better, but whether they’d get enough support from Middle America to win the presidency, I don’t know.

Trump instigated the situation to justify doing this. Period.

It was always going to end this way because Putin ordered it, and he has enough video on Trump and his billionaire pals to get what he wants.

If only Epstein had lived long enough to see what power he still wields in this world— wars, fascism, racism, genocide—can all be laid at his feet because rich people like to rape enslaved women & children and therefore the tapes exist. What a proud moment for Epstein.

It’s both. I am sure that the ex-KGB man Putin has more dirt on Trump than you could fit into all of Mar-a-Lago’s bathrooms. And Trump wished he were smart enough to really be a dictator (just as he always tried to be accepted in NY and failing miserably), making him all buddy-buddy with his (smarter, actually “competent”) autocrats and dictators (who laugh behind his back and use him just like the tool he is).

Very true, and much more than any of us even know yet. But his real estate days are not over: he is still “doing deals” involving his properties from the Oval Office.

And lest anyone ever forget, the basic facts of Gaza are these:

        Trump: developer
Gaza: land now almost fully cleared for development

Interesting how that has been working out for him.

Yeh, there seems to be an effort to dismantle both the EU, US, and any western agreements like five eyes. There have been other times when men gathered in a room and carved up the world… I wasn’t thinking it be in my lifetime when this is attempted again.

I would have NO objections at all regarding dismantling of the Five Eyes - this surveillance shit can get fucked.

I have mild objections regarding dismantling of NATO - as a defensive pact it fulfills an important role, but it might be superceded by something not dependent on the increasingly unstable US and that would be fine.

I have massive objections regarding dismantling of the EU - this is the largest economic and peace project Europe has ever seen, and has brought prosperity all over the continent. I have my gripes with its structure - the EU Parliament needs more tools, and the Commission needs less (the commission is an completely undemocratic blob in the middle of an otherwise pretty democratic structure, as seen with the commissions regular push for spying on citizens), and also we have to change the rules which need 100% of countries to agree in general, because it causes everything to be soooo slow (and easily disrupted by outside forces), but in general the EU is a pretty successful project.

The good thing is - all european states KNOW that the EU is needed nowadays. We can’t realistically go back into a time where a small land mass as we are is splintered into scores of small pieces.

That’s true, I should have thought about Canada and other allies of the West (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, maybe others).

I guess the US was the lynchpin that held “the West” together. Without good leadership from them, then I guess the world is as Mark Carney described: the US doing its own thing, and then a bunch of “middle powers”, who should act together, if they want better outcomes when dealing with the big powers.

No whatever dirt Putin has on him, if he has any or needs it, has to be something that Trump himself finds embarrassing. He’s not embarrassed about raping children he brags about that, it’s got to be something that he would find emasculating. Again assuming he has anything on Trump because Trump such a scumbag he could be doing this just because.

There’s actually far more soldier deaths, as the Discord Leaks showed. The Ukraine War is nothing but lies.

But yes, so little civilian deaths is unheard of, and almost all from Ukraine’s retribution on their own supposed people.

China brokered peace between Saudi Arabia and Yemen before America and Israel arbitrarily attacked Iran, triggering Saudi attacks on Yemen. China has consistently pushed for mediation and diplomacy at the UN.

America is out of control and needs to be stopped, and this didn’t start with Trump.

We currently arms over 80% of all dictatorships.

A liberal democracy is impossible under the conditions America and Europe imposes.

They’re just NOW getting rid of the CFA franc!

America necessitates a strongman, elected or not, just to remain sovereign, just to keep us from taking all their natural resources and enslaving the nation as whole under neoliberal feudalism.

For an American, you’d have to imagine omnipotent space invaders with an unstoppable armada to even begin to imagine what it’s like to be a developing nation with natural resources today.

We had the nerve to parade a black general in front of Congress to say that Traore is using the funds from gold mines he nationalized to “protect the junta”. He spent them on an agricultural green revolution that has made Burkina Faso food independent. He’s creating dams and irrigation canals, transforming them into a bread basket of the Sahel. He’s given free tractors to farmers, built grain processing plants.

Your rhetoric is such bullshit, especially when America arms over 80% of dictatorships globally. We are the LEAST democratic nation in the world for this reason alone. Democracy is not a universal principle to us, just a privilege you enjoy on the backs of the oppressed. It’s only a selective cudgel weaponized to steal natural resources.

Our not-so-proxy war with Russia is no different.

Neither America nor Europe has the CFA-Franc-Zone. You are either thoroughly confused, blinded by hate, or a bot.

You keep posting this resource graph as if people are claiming this was a war for resources and this was proof it’s all wrong - neither is true. The war is about restoring power, glory and perceived claim to once/former territory, which is worse, imo.

I’m not defending colonialism or neoliberalism, btw.

You’re not saying anything, just ad hominems.

Use real words to explain how I’m wrong.
