Work is super stressful right now and I could use some comfort food ideas. Especially since mine tend to involve carbs but I think carbs are making me bloat in a way they didn’t when I was 20. (Aside: getting older sucks.) Never been a fan of ice cream either.
Mine are typically mashed potatoes, or potatoes generally, and plain bean and rice burritos, cheese optional. My husband thinks I’m crazy because it’s all so plain but when I’m sick or stressed and my stomach is upset, that’s what I want.
Braised lamb shank with red wine and carrots, plus mashed potatoes or egg noodles if you’re OK with some carbs.
Collard greens and bacon.
This is a perfect recipe, but I just fry up some bacon instead of using a turkey leg (though I’m sure that would be great too).
Grilled chicken and a bunch of vegetables (shredded carrots, cabbage, pickled onions, etc) on fresh made naan smeared with hummus. I like some Nandos Garlic sauce on it as well
How do you make your naan bread? I’ve been making a quick and easy one with yogurt, flour and baking soda, and they’re good, but not quite as good as ‘real’ ones.
Does naan not mean “bread”?
I use this recipe, myself. Ive had good results

I mix all the dry ingredients together thoroughly (otherwise the yeast clumps with the butter/ghee badly) before mixing the whole dough, and use the hottest water from my tap.
Pizza, it’s always pizza.
Just had one
Maybe for dinner tonight…
Pizza is unfortunatly my go to depression food 😅
Any vegetable i like fried in a pan, deglazed with any liquid (wine, broth, cream, water), some things to thicken the sauce (cheese, starch, flour), with a bit of any seasoning, and this goes on either pasta, rice or couscous. Very bad for the carbs part though, i admit.
Another option i recently found is kidney beans mashed with a fork, with some onions/garlic/green stuff in tiny pieces, maybe a bit of flour/starch and some seasoning (spices, soy sauce), fried in a layer of oil in a pan, makes very good patties that we really enjoy.
Tuna mayo jacket potato always goes down a treat for me
Pizza
Tangerines, sweet, easy to peel, healthy and you dont have to cook.
The poor things
Law of the jungle. Bad luck for them they’re so delicious.
My go to is always classic Mince and Tatties. My grandpa made it most nights when I was growing up and I find it very calming and satisfying.
Nice and plain as well so it might work for you
Mince and tatties? Whereabouts in Scotland are you from, pal?
Highlands ✌️
I grew up in the Borders, so lowlander! Now living in England and occassionally ordering meat pies and tatties scones through the post!
What’s tatties, precious?
I normally love Mac N Cheese but since you’re wanting to cut carbs my second favorite is jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, best on the grill but good in the oven too.
Oooh heartburn be damned, that does sound good!
Comfort food is supposed to be simple and comforting. Nobody’s comfort food is osso buco on a bed of garlic and chive orzo with white wine braised pearl onions.
Any sort of shrimp makes me happy. Sounds expensive, but 2lbs. is cheaper than a fast food meal around here.
Easy? Bagel or English muffins with cheese, any sort, and powedered pepper and green onion tops.
My partner’s go to is Chicken and Biscut crackers with Canned Cheese
I like the dollar cheeseburgers from McDonald’s that aren’t $1 anymore.
Canned Cheese
That’s a thing? I didn’t know that was a thing. What’s it taste like?
It tastes closest to American cheese/craft singles, but it’s more of a liquid than a solid.
Leaning tower of cheesa
Cheezwhiz. It’s cheese but not cheese in all the wrong but oh so right ways.
Quarter pounder with cheese
Homemade pasta sauce made from ground beef and pork, in the style of a Bolognese / Pörkölt crossover.
California rolls, shrimp avocado rolls, salmon avocado rolls, miso soup
Or
Chipotle burrito bowl with chicken, barbacoa, brown rice, black beans, pinto beans, extra fresh tomato salsa, extra red sauce, extra cheese, lettuce, and queso
Their barbacoa is severely underrated. No idea why everyone wants the chicken so bad, it’s dry as fuck.
