My light will be on, but they aren’t getting a lot of chocolate.
Years ago, I did full-size candy bars. Not anymore.
Capitalism ruins everything.
We found a costco business centre near us. They had pretty good deals on cases of full size chocolate bars. Due to shrinkflation we decided to do full size bars for the first time. Still spent like 100$ on chocolate though.
Uhh. We get over a 100 kids a year, mileage may vary with this.
Go to the older neighborhoods where there isn’t so many young kids and I find their is usually larger items there. One of the ladies on my dads street would fill a shoebox with a bunch of stuff. A pop can, cholate bar, popcorn bag, stuff like that,
Give $1 bills. Cheaper, and can be exchanged for goods or services.
This started around COVID. Decor shot up. It used to be cheap to decorate for a holiday, almost like business figured even the poor deserved a little something on holidays.
Now, the squeeze. How high can we price this stuff and still have people trying to participate. Also, fuck you all, dear consumers, especially the poor and their kids.
Another factor is that a lot of those decorations are manufactured in China.
COVID, various other supply chain issues, global conflicts driving up fuel prices, trade wars. And of course corporate greed on top of that.
The solution? I propose making our own decorations with locally sourced materials. Make some stuff out of old cardboard boxes or pinecones. Go thrifting.

Fuck yeah.
You don’t need plastic Chinese crap to enjoy a holiday. Make your own decorations, make your own treats. You know, like people used to do all the time. It will be much more meaningful that way, and way better for the environment – less demand for ocean-crossing container ships; less plastic waste getting thrown away later, etc.
Rare is the individual who eats unwrapped anything from people they don’t know.
Not so easy. The DIY market is not budget. Sewing, woodworking, and any basic home construction materials are ridiculously priced now.
The only remotely budget item left is a carved pumpkin, and you can’t reuse that, though it does come with a snack if you want to take the time to roast pumpkin seeds.
Thrift stores are mostly a no go for budget now too, especially Goodwill. Resellers have well and truly fucked the used market though they hate people mentioning it. You can get lucky, if you live in a less aggressive resell area that also has actual charity owned shops. The chains though, including ReStore, are no longer budget.
“Locally sourced” usually means the Indy shop that costs almost double. Again, not budget.
That’s fair, and why I mentioned pine cones too. Thrifting, at least where I am, is still very volatile. Different neighborhoods have different selections and price points, and different stores do too. I avoid the Salvation Army because they’re a shitty company too.
I also like to go to outlet stores like Gabriel Brothers/Gabe’s. Yes, it is cheap stuff from China, but it is basically the last stop before a landfill. The products are likely being sold at a loss just tk try to claw back some revenue before it gets tossed, so I don’t feel like I am contributing to the demand for consumption.
Find what you can that is cheap, and find a way to make it festive. It doesn’t have to last for all eternity, and if it is cheap and environmentally friendly it is fine to only last one season. String up popcorn as garland. Paint old corn cobs. Dye hardboiled eggs for every holiday, and eat them after. Cardboard and paper products, sticks, rocks. Try to be mindful of public spaces of course- if everyone just ransacks the local park then the public will be left with a muddy pit. Take an evergreen sprig from the hedges outside your apartment and stick it in a glass on your table.
Or don’t, i’m not your dad

How to get adults to trick or treat again
we’re also turning our light off this year. too many kids, too little money
I bought a value pack box of non-Halloween themed individually wrapped small chocolate/cookie bars at Costco for 10 bucks. It’s actually better quality chocolate than the Halloween junk too. I don’t get many kids though. It’s only 60 pieces.
I recommend you set up some nets around your house so you can get free eggs and toilet paper.cuz your house is definitely getting egged and TP’d, my friend.wrong comment, sorry
For giving out chocolate bars that don’t have the picture of a pumpkin on its wrapper? I don’t think you understand what I’ll be giving out.
Shoot, my reply went to the wrong comment. Apologies.
Food pantry gave us 18 pack of the nasty coco candy coated Rollo’s. I am handing them out because its not milk chocolate, gross. 18 is more than we usually get anyways.

Eggs and TP aren’t cheap anymore like they were 30 years ago. I doubt kids would waste what little money they have on those when they could be spending that on Robux or Fortnight skins instead.

Was already thinking of not bothering this year. Only got one group last year, most kids just walked right by the buildings my condo is in. And then the candy just sits all year because I rarely feel like having candy even when I have the munchies.
Not to mention a lot of the candies themselves are made by shitty companies.
I’m making balls of candied popcorn. Don’t like it cuz you think I’m a random child murderer? Then fuck off.
Kids who come to my house are getting floss picks.
Keep me in a good mood if you don’t want the used ones.
