I heard something about a rogue employee selling a studio to a wealthy scammer for a dollar (and a massive kickback). Does that describe disco elysium’s situation?
According to Kurvitz (game designer and writer of the prequel novel Sacred and Terrible Air) and Rostov (lead artist):
- Kompus (Zaum Studio CEO) bought a majority share in Zaum
- Kompus bought four early sketches from Zaum for 1 GBP
- Kompus sold back those sketches to Zaum for 4.8 million EUR
- When they began raising questions, Kurvitz and Rostov were demoted and later fired
The story has A LOT more than four bullet points.
Of course there’s a lot more. I specifically condensed the story down to bullet points relevant to the “$1 purchase” mentioned in the parent comment.
Having no idea of the story behind this, I read the gofundme and still have no idea of the story behind this.
Yeah that sounds like wild ramblings of an unsound mind.
Haven’t played Disco Elysium yet but from what I heard that’s also on brand.
What a harrowing story. I wish them much success with their legal battle.
Without having ever heard about that game or the name of the writer here, honestly, that gofundme reads bad. A writer that can’t stick to a factual description of his situation and uses his plea for a creative writing exercise to embellish his cause.
And even if I trust all of his story to be true, it leaves the picture of a person who made a lot of bad decisions and is now asking others to pay for them. And by that I do not mean that he wouldn’t / shouldn’t have the rights to that game, but the decisions leading up to that point.
If I go downtown right now, I’d find ten people within the hour who have never had a chance in life and are in a worse situation in terms of recovering from it by themselves than this person here.
So, other people’s shit stinks worse, so then his stinks less, somehow?
Maybe just consider spending your time helping one of those ten people then instead of writing a comment criticizing someone else’s plea for help.
I do help people. Also with money. But that wasn’t relevant to my point.
Maybe you should look into it before blinding commenting? And maybe read the disclaimer in the post??
You do realize you’re in a community for the game that the writer is for right? So obviously people in this community are going to care about the writer.
And giving money to his cause does not have to take away from helping others, it’s very possible to do both. Your complaining isn’t helpful at all.
Triggered much because someone posts an opinion you don’t agree with? Boo fucking hoo, cry me a river.
What would you do with the river if they cried it for you?
How much water would someone have to drink before they are hydrated enough to cry water consistently enough to call it a river?
Looks like that person’s opinion triggered you. Need a tissue for those tears?
You don’t know this game nor what happened there. You were never the intended public to donate.
What happened is actual theft of intellectual property, not to be confused with copyright. The world of disco Elysium is a paracosm, a massive inner world developed intimately over a creators life.
For those that have one, such world become a part of them, intertwined with your own identity.
A loophole by a pig, enforced copyright where no moral right exists. It bans the creator of making stories or using elements of the universe that exists inside their own head.
Such loss is not dissimilar to losing a child and i say this as a parent. I cant blame him for borderline insane emotional talking.
It ended up on the front page of my lemmy instance, so I feel invited to read & comment. As I said, from what the plea describes, there’s plenty of people who one could help a lot more with a lot less money and out of circumstances that they have less chances of getting themselves out of. I am not saying I have zero sympathy for the guy, but if I think about charity, I think about the weakest of society first. And this guy still has his creativity and a safety net (family, friends) to continue working.
You are right in that there are people in worse situations as you describe and I hope you do donate to them however you can. But the person here affected has taken bad decisions and it is actively being legally attacked, this is a position I understand and can relate to so I have donated to him.
I’m replying to you as you have replied to this post as to express my own opinion and to say that although you are not wrong in your comment, it is a bad position to take and might be considered arrogant and presumptuous. May you never be in a position where you need to ask others for money.

This is the only part people forget before giving others shit on Lemmy and reddit. I didn’t ask for Dingo Epilepsy news. So when I comment it’s because I was slightly interested in what your platform had to offer…
Y’all screaming entitlement so hard sheesh.
Because we jumped in on a /all shown post? Close/private your community if you don’t want people to be involved.
Both of your comments are just complaining, that’s not being involved. And the other guys comment was just rude and ignorant.

This ^^ isn’t a complaint.
Their perspective is valid whether you think so or not, thats how perspectives work. Dont be so closed minded.
It’s “Disco Elysium”.
Lol I know. I was being a tool.
