Sherman was incredibly racist against native Americans.

He was also meh on the whole slavery thing. He just believed the Union was the Union and that was that.

I venerate him as much as the next person but he was still a product of his time with all the bigotry and racism that comes with that.

I.e. there were definitely things Sherman did that were wrong.
