Hear me out. You’re right to exist in anyway that you find fitting. And that applies to every one American. And you should definitely defend your right to do so. However it’s very depressing and frustrating that the side that is supposed to be all-inclusive does nothing but bash and try to destroy you emotionally because your ideals don’t perfectly line up with theirs. IMO that’s a good reason why conservatives are at the top right now. They don’t refuse a person because they have a slight opposing view (I’m excluding religious conservatives because fuck them). Regardless of Jan 6th. It was assumed that around 80K heads could be counted at the protest but only around 2k made it into the Capitol. And yet the liberal and democrat side claim that our total American freedoms are being removed. Lemmy as a fediverse is mainly used as political propaganda regardless of what side you think is right or what the original purpose of Lemmy was supposed to be. And then anything remotely in the realm of politics (even a meme that uses a political figure that the majority of the fediverse opposes) is belittled, treated as a fight or a threat, and then respond accordingly (even though it’s unwarranted). A lot of the mods out there really do try to simply keep the peace, and I acknowledge all of those people that support civil disagreement (you all are the ones that really make Lemmy). However, as the fediverse grows, more ideas and influence are going to take hold. Many communities would prefer to alienate and belitle an opposing view just because it’s different from their view. If you find yourself like that, you aren’t helping progress. It doesn’t matter what side you’re on in that case. You’re part of the problem

    1. Go to place where people express ideas and opinions
    2. Become offended by those ideas and opinions
    3. Spread rhetoric against those popular ideas and opinions
    4. Become even more offended because people don’t agree with my ideas or opinions
    5. Pretend I’m a cyber warrior fighting it back against some amorphous oppressive regime with “radical ideas and opinions” that differ from my own
    6. Get absolutely downvoted to Oblivion
    7. Cry and pee pants
    8. Make post about how place where people express ideas and opinions aren’t the same ideas and opinions that I have and I’m mad about it
    9. Cry some more in the comments about how everyone’s a big ol’ meanie for not agreeing with my ideals and opinions
    10. Rinse and repeat

If you don’t like this site, why not go on twitter or reddit? Or heck truth social may be more what you’re looking for. Hell, you could even make your own Lemmy instance for you!

I’m not sure what your goals are other than catharsis here.

Same as reddit, you just assume their viewing is 100% correct and prove yourself in their eyes. Otherwise you’re dumb to some random loser with opinions on facts they didn’t research. I agree the bias is heavy and the discourse is like arguing with children.😞

    • Some fucking line breaks would considerably help your point be easier to read. Right now it comes across as a crazy screed.

    • You’re complaining to a void that doesn’t want to hear you or care, and this is definitively not the right community to post this in. There are various rant, off my chest, and unpopular opinion communities. This is a stretch for a community meant for meta discussion about your specific instance.

    • Lemmy was never meant to be free speech specifically, or accepting of all opinions. Just more open than Reddit, and with the ability for people to host their own spaces if their opinions were being suppressed by other instances. There was no goal for every instance to be open to every point of view. Lemmy’s lead dev, Dessalines, is a transphobic “hard tankie” marxist leninist, who runs the Marxist Leninist instance lemmy.ml.

    • You will find this kind of “suppression”/“bullying”/“negative responses to out-group ideas and thinking” everywhere online. Especially in spaces set up like Lemmy/Reddit/HackerNews etc with voting effecting content visibility. It is inherent to the design. Even on sites without this format, like 4chan, you still see this sort of behavior. Best get used to it.

    • Also, from personal experience, just block communities and users that are assholes. The Fediverse has a low enough count of daily active users that blocking actually makes a difference in the content and viewpoints you encounter.

    • Lastly, there are right wing lemmy instances. They tend to be filled with actual nazis and pedophiles, which is why no instances will federate with them.

Spoiler: I agree that calling Jan 6 an attempted coup is a stretch. The most heavily armed group in the US tried to overthrow the government and there was minimal firearm based violence?

That said, none of the chucklefucks that broke into buildings deserve any sort of pardon. They broke the law fair and simple. Feelings of righteousness don’t change that. Only coordinated legal and political effort would, and I don’t think anyone is going to back the idea that those building should be open access to an uncontrolled public.

Wow. I have bo idea where to start with this one:

The fedditverse is not about americans, leftists are not all-including and whoever believes that has not understood politics in the slightest way. The conservative in the USA destroys everything outside their scope right now and a lot of history is being rewritten, for example the shit that went down on the 6th of January 24.

I read a lot of uninformed bias in this post and i am not surprised you feel attacked a lot. I bet you are, and rightfully so, because this is fox news level uninformed stuff you call knowledge here.

Understand that this is not a rebuttal. You are using the paradox of intolerance to try to justify your position.

Yes, as someone pointed out, the purity tests and echo chambers can be a problem, but when you’re up against a world-wide rise in fascism, saying “we absolutely must fix this problem first” is too close to saying “I’m ok with some fascism, as long as my feelings aren’t hurt.”

    a slight opposing view

hahaha. yes, dismantling all checks and balances is ‘slight’. attempting to evict millions of what are statistically a more peaceful class of humans than actual citizens under the lies of ‘criminality’ is sooo ‘slight’. removing the forward progress of minorities including the disabled and disenfranchised (lgbtq) is just soooo ‘slight’

it would be fucking hilarious if the reality wasnt so objectively fascist.

dude just declared that only he can decide what laws mean. dude completely ignores the constitution for all his executive orders. dude doesnt know how to be president and is effectively dismantling the entire federal government especially any regulatory agencies designed to not allow a single person to destroy the country. dude is hiding all government information so he can work in the dark.

the only people who approve of a politician acting as a dictator are people who want a dictator.

                zero grey area.

‘you’re right to exist in anyway you find fitting’ there must surely be some caveats here. ‘and that applies to every one american’ what about the rest of the world and other sovereign nations?

but i agree with you, yes it is very depressing and frustrating that every corner of the internet is being wrought into purity-testing echo chambers. understanding this might lead you to questions like: who benefits from this outcome?

anyway, i appreciate the work that went into this rant-- its a journey and i hope it was cathartic

for what its worth, i eat mostly downvotes and i am stronger for it. show your strength by keeping your head up and maintaining composure

No caveat. Just observations that I am pointing out. And I’m from US where there are some significant social and political issues going on that I’d like to address. If you are from another country and you feel other social issues need to be addresses depending on your country and region, then do what I did. More voices on a single issue is more ears hearing about the issue

by caveat i mean: there must be situations where your existence might become an existential threat to another’s - in which case it is not so simple as an absolute. we put the cart in front of the horse by relying on ideologies handed to us without scrutinizing them… speak up, yes- but that’s what your opponents are doing when they vehemently disagree with you… hedge these outcomes by knowing better the complexities that underly your claims. godspeed

Yes, it is. People getting radicalised left and right, and I think it’s by design. It’s possible were supposed to be pitted against each other so the wannabe autocrats get their civil war they try to force on us for years now with their rethoric and actions.

It’s possible this anger turns against them instead.
