News@lemmy.world•Trump allies pushing for martial law if he loses midterms
121·1 day agoThere is literally no constitutional or legal provision for a president to declare martial law.
All a president has is the Insurrection Act, and I would be shocked if it were not struck down almost immediately if invoked because people were actively voting or an election was lost.

17·1 day agoI spent all but four of the first 25 years of my life in a metric country. It was the only system I was taught. I defended it as you did.
It is perfectly fine. However, most here have never used both for extended periods in their lives to judge. I have.

27·1 day agoCertainly happy to expand.
The practical use of units derives from the features of our environments and what is important to us in our lives The length of a day is one of them. The characteristics of water is not, and that is where metric is derived.
When one asks the temperature in the morning, one is not asking how much energy went into a volume of water. One is asking how to dress, so appreciable changes in a sense of temperature are appropriate.
When on weighs themselves on a scale, the ability to calculate the volume of water equivalent is not the goal.
I have now evenly split my life in a metric and common country. I grew up with metric, and find common much more practical because it evolved over centuries to be so.

210·1 day agoHow would being educated exclusively in metric in a metric country not make me familiar?
I immigrated to a common unit nation as an adult.
Given I am a person and better and familiar with metric (and know plenty of immigrants who agree), your point is not valid.
How many years have you lived in a common unit nation to experience the difference?

223·2 days agoNeat. Now use metric time. Tell me, how many kiloseconds are in a day and megaseconds in a year?
In the same way people seem to be able to learn there are 60 seconds in a minute, I know there are 12 inches in a foot.
Metric is wonderful scientifically and annoying practically. I’m with Orwell, I like a pint of beer, not 500 mL or 1 L.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do we need legal genders at all?
2·2 days agoPlease explain why. Do you believe that all males are domestic abusers and that no women in same-sex relationships have ever been abused?
I volunteered at a shelter with my mother as a younger teen. Then overnight I went from someone who could reliably count cans of Habitant soup and diapers to someone who could not be trusted to know the address. My best friend at the time and his mother were victims of domestic violence. The inference hurt and still does 30 years later. So I would like to understand your position.

1·4 days ago-
Citric acid is a fabric softener that will also damage some fibers over time.
-
Wool is the main concern.
-
Only if you use excessive amounts.
-
No.
-
It has no bearing on drying. One or more of three things is true: you are not properly spacing your clothes when drying; your apartment is generally too humid; your apartment becomes too humid because the volume of water you are bringing to put in the air saturates the volume of air while being airtight.
-
You could be, but it doesn’t lead to mildew. Are you using the spin cycle on its highest setting? That helps the most.
-
Yes with oxiclean or citric acid in the fabric softener dispenser.
-
No.
I hang dry in Florida. Humidity outside is 70-95%. I have never had an issue. The reason is spin at max speed, only hang dry for up to 8 hours outside, then bring the clothes indoors to finish and my air conditioning keeps the house under 60% humidity.

Please read and do not use an ozone generator:

I would ask about the source first.
Are your air vents dirty? Outdoor pollution? Shedding pets? Fabrics?
An air purifier may be an expensive mask rather than resolving the issue at the source.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Charged my car yesterday while grocery shopping, this is how much it costs
14·9 days agoThat is quite expensive.
I would encounter a rate like that charging at >200 kW maybe on an interstate or at our high end mall, but not a Walmart.
Of course, I mostly charge at work for free or home for $0.15/kWh.

Green Energy@slrpnk.net•California Becomes Latest State to Approve Plug-in Solar | States across the country are letting residents install small solar systems without utility permission.
1·2 months agoIt depends upon what you mean by worth it.
If you mean evironmentally, it is likely the cheapest way in the long run to offset carbon intensive power usage, but that depends upon your location’s daylight energy mix.
If you mean financially, your payback period will depend upon whether you have a free circuit at your dwelling to plug into, the panel positioning and solar intensity, your cost of capital, and your prevailing cost of power. Your payback could be anywhere from two to over ten years.
If you mean as a backup power source, they are locked out in case of grid loss of power.
I would install one if I could, but my state lets its power monopoly call the shots. So instead I subscribe to solar.
It’s the greatest strategy oil companies ever devised. Well that and funding the Sierra Club to be anti-nuclear.
