  • I got my numbers from the exact same source. Your own link contradicts you. 4 million is not 2% of the US pop. 4 million is 1.1% of the population.

I never said they were split 50/50. I said they were distributed.

Meaning it’s not “four million votes for Democrats”

And fuck you for assuming my ethics. I think the fact that felons can’t vote is absolutely immoral. Nobody should be deprived of their vote.

But I don’t lie about statistics.

  • I’m going to address only the last part: what is the value of having stupid people vote.

The value in allowing stupid people to vote is that your opposition can’t change the definition of “stupid” to include only you and your friends.

The law is a blunt instrument. If we enshrine in law the power for Congress to deprive people of their vote, we have agreed that depriving people “for the right reasons” is justification for doing so, and now the question simply becomes “can you convince people this is a good reason to deprive people of their ability to vote”.

We already have this with Felons. They are a miniscule percent of the population though, so it cannot be abused to win an election. It’s bad enough the precedent kind of already exists. Expanding it would be self destructive

EDIT: Because it’s been brought up, felons who cannot vote make up 1.1% of the US population.

  • There could be a variety of reasons for this behavior…

    • She is uncomfortable because she doesn’t know how to comfort you
    • She is avoiding her own trauma triggers
    • She is ADHD or Autistic and doesn’t understand what’s expected of her in those moments
    • She is not looking for a partner and only wants a relationship that’s “fun”
    • She is callous and doesn’t care to put in the effort to support a partner

But here’s the thing… the root cause is not important (yet)

If your partner is unwilling or unable to support you, that’s not a good partner for you. That doesn’t make her a bad person necessarily…she may not be capable of dealing with everything you’re going through. But even if that’s the case then she still might not be the right partner for you.

I recommend trying to get her to focus on you before having your next conversation about this. Don’t start talking about the problem until her phone is away and she’s making eye contact. Don’t do it over text.

If that goes okay, then tell her what you need. Don’t sugar coat it or be vague. Tell her directly “when I say this particular please it means I’m looking to you for support and I need you to lock in, listen to where I’m saying, and engage with me as a supportive partner.”

If she can’t do that much, then it is probably time to move on. And if she listens and ignores you…it’s probably time to move one.

Communication is hard. And it’s the most important thing in relationships.

    Good luck!

EDIT TO ADD: As someone else said, she also can’t be your therapist. Especially not at your ages. That doesn’t mean she can’t listen and provide comfort though. It’s important to manage your expectations - she’s not going to be able to give you advice or help you solve these issues - but it is not unreasonable to expect that she gives you her undivided attention when you are vulnerable

You’re the one who was trying to make a point about the pride stuff here, not me. I’m just responding to your points.

My only point was that the original comment in the screenshot is, in my opinion, pretty obviously talking about the (very flawed, and inappropriately applied) concept of “fighting back will restore pride” and not “hitting girls restores pride”.

You think boys don’t lose pride when they’re beaten up by another boy?

This is real close to “Tell me you’ve never been bullied without telling me you’ve never been bullied”.

Grade-school fights are always about pride in some form or another.

Seriously, I went to an all boys school, and by your logic no student in my entire school would ever have bruised pride since they never got beaten up by a girl.

Specifically referred to as “children” and then exclusively uses pronouns as the only form of gendered language, in a language where it is standard to use gendered pronouns when referring to a specific individual.

Yes, the comment could have used “they” instead of “he/his” but that is not yet common practice in English (though I wish we’d get there)

    Next question please.

  • In an effort to provide an actual response:

What you’ve displayed is called “black and white thinking”… You have essentially argued that “all things should be subject to government oversight, or nothing should be. There is no in between”.

The argument against the second amendment is based on the measurable harm vs the measurable value.

RAM in the hands of consumers has measurable value. We can quantify the things we can do with it that we couldn’t do without it.

Nobody has been able to quantify the value of owning high powered semi automatic rifles in a way that is even debatably close to the quantifiable lives lost to them. You cannot quantify “the ability to overthrow a government” and attempts to quantify “good guy with a gun” events fails spectacularly.

Like most things in life, nuance is important.

Well THAT’S pretty fuckin toxic. Yikes.

As someone who was bullied a lot, I frequently got told fighting back (against the boys at my all boys school) would restore my pride. I was never told “go find a girl to hit when she’s mean to you, it’ll restore your pride.”

Take that for what it’s worth.

    Byeeeeeee.

Please quote the part where it says “boys regain their pride by hitting girls” specifically and NOT “kids regain their pride by fighting back against bullies”.

Because the latter is quite obviously what the OP was getting at, not the former.

If you genuinely think OP was saying “hit girls to get your pride back” then we’re done here and I’m just gonna move on with my day

I do not disagree with this comment in any way.

But this is a very different comment than your OP.

If your OP had talked about “teaching violence supports patriarchy” I wouldn’t be here discussing this.

“This kid should hit back” is not an overtly sexist position. It is a position that supports patriarchy, for sure, by reinforcing violence culture which advantages men in individual conflicts and harms their growth and development.

“This kid should hit back; it’s not like they’re a grown man and woman” is, IMO, a position of “it’s not like they’re physically mismatched”. Not one of “it’s okay/encouraged because of their genders”.

I’m sorry that people on Lemmy continue to do stupid shit that enables and supports patriarchy. That is certainly a form of systemic sexism.

I still don’t think this is a particularly good example of “Lemmy has a sexism problem”.
