Ive been on Reddit for 10 to 15 years. Its always been a strange place but ive never seen anything like what’s going on at the moment.

    • weird rules (like ‘Luigi’) being applied system-wide without being communicated
    • automated actions applied to individual users site-wide, like allowing them to engage but preventing them from creating posts anywhere
    • over zealous mods. I’m assuming a lot of mods got sick of it and left over the last few years and those doing the work are under experienced. Or maybe just AI. Its possible.
    • GPTs engaging in posts and comments for training
    • agents from hostile governments agitating and spurring on political discussions that favour their agenda.

So yeah I’m giving up on it now, its just no fun anymore.

I am pretty sure a bunch of mods on big subreddits are actually Reddit employees cosplaying as normal users too.

Oh, and Reddit is now shadow banning your accounts when you evade a ban on a sub. So now I got all my accounts shadow banned because I ended up commenting on a sub I was banned on one account without noticing it, so I have zero reasons to go back to using reddit anymore. At least before I got a ban and was notified about how long it would take for my accounts to be usable again, now they are shadow banned without any notifications and I have no idea if they will ever go back to normal or not, so fuck it.

5-6accts were simulatenouslly banned last month, because i was temp banned for reporting someone, so it triggered thier “AI to look for any account they can ban”. they also retroactively(i assume) applied the ban to any accts you made, if any of your accts even if deleted years ago participated in getting banned in a subreddit. allegedly i heard a ban/shadowban can last over a year, but im pretty sure its arbitrary and most likely switched to being permanent in most cases.

r/technology decided to ban me for reporting obvious misinformation, and conversation manipulation around a trump post.

oh yea i know some admins can be the mods. there are 92 mods that own over 500 subs, so i would think they are part of this power group of mods. and then we got the lowly mods of the regular subs. i heard about the blanket shadowbans in another site, they still do that to people who had100s of accts, but it also hit regular people too, that dint even violate a policy, so im thinking its an AI doing all these bannings and so many innocents are just caught up, and they cant even repeal it.

yeah, just got banned, it seems like today i finally begin my lemmy journey. How well does it hold up for deep subject matter knowledge that i found in some subreddits over the years and how is the best way to tap into that knowledge with lemmy? Does google index them or is their native search better than whatever reddits search was?

got banned for trying to help reddit too. Threatened to punch anybody that upvoted violent content and to knock it off! Being a bootlicker is one thing, but the gaul to be ungrateful to someone trying to help!??

That is a bridge to far and I say “Good day, sir.”

Now lemmy gets the opportunity to impress me, I hope it is grateful for the chance.

They keep permanently suspending ppl so theyll wind up here, almost like someone working there secretly wants the fediverse to do well and is shifting the population over by permanently banning them (I dont really believe this before ppl argue like im stating a fact)

I got banned for, I don’t even remember what, it was something really minor. Got a new account using Brave, and have been shadowbanned. Absolutely non-functional site for me now. Banning people based on upvotes though, holy shit. To suppress posts that people actually like? That’s the whole point of going there for me: the garbage gets knocked to the bottom where no one has to see it. Not anymore

This is awesome. Are they going to start banning any reference to the SuperMario Bros IP, now?

    e.g.

“This guy is looking more and more like Bowser every day, someone ought to do something about it”

“Princess peach has had it, time to go get the parasol”

“I’m sick of these motherfucking goombas on this motherfucking Earth”

Why don’t they just say what they really want? They want you to be docile, not challenge the echo chamber, and upvote everything and smile like an idiot. I’ve learned this lesson and pretty much just block all ragebait subs and mostly sit quietly in the corner. Just watch the ads like a good data point.

Well, maybe I was just in the wrong reddit spaces to notice. I didn’t see any occasion (or article) that mentioned censorship like it’s happening on Twitter. Even things that are commonly censored in social media like posts about death and suicide were not censored. I’d love to know more if this was happening outside my bubble.

There’s going to come a point when the things we can’t say may need to be said. A time when the message is delivered with blank comments.

[ . . . ] will carry a message of it’s own that becomes much more difficult to ban.

They then will expect people to mirror the bot’s narrative without engaging because they think we are this stupid lol

I’m just going to latch onto the top comment…

An actual reddit admin posted this 2 days ago:

Today we are rolling out a new (sort of) enforcement action across the site. Historically, the only person actioned for posting violating content was the user who posted the content. The Reddit ecosystem relies on engaged users to downvote bad content and report potentially violative content. This not only minimizes the distribution of the bad content, but it also ensures that the bad content is more likely to be removed. On the other hand, upvoting bad or violating content interferes with this system.

So, starting today, users who, within a certain timeframe, upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies will begin to receive a warning. We have done this in the past for quarantined communities and found that it did help to reduce exposure to bad content, so we are experimenting with this sitewide. This will begin with users who are upvoting violent content, but we may consider expanding this in the future. In addition, while this is currently “warn only,” we will consider adding additional actions down the road.

We know that the culture of a community is not just what gets posted, but what is engaged with. Voting comes with responsibility. This will have no impact on the vast majority of users as most already downvote or report abusive content. It is everyone’s collective responsibility to ensure that our ecosystem is healthy and that there is no tolerance for abuse on the site.

      Screenshot

This was the only thing left reddit had going for itself: that users can influence the algorithm with their votes.

      The subredditDrama posts are here:

      reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1j5cqq1/multiple_subreddits_express_concern_after_reddit/
      reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1j5tcgj/after_an_rpopculture_moderator_is_suspended/

As someone who switched to feddit just a few days ago I can say this has been building up. Small things like deciding which comments get visibility, phasing out old.reddit, doing nothing about bots, introducing bot/karmafarma-friendly mechanisms, an uptick in pro-MAGA posts/comments as well as disinfo bots … but still, this feels like an uncharacteristically large step.

I saw users warning other users to be careful (how they upvote) or they might get banned. I don’t know what else screams “censorship” and “hostile environment” quite like encouraging your own users to caution those around them to shut up.
