Senate Republicans do not have enough votes for cloture, a legislative procedure to end debate and move for a vote. Republicans only have a 53-47 seat majority, and 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture. If Democrats don’t provide enough votes for cloture, the government is almost certainly headed toward a shutdown Friday.

Despite promising a fight, Senate Democrats are reportedly considering a vote swap. In exchange for providing enough votes to end debate on the GOP spending bill, Senate Republicans would allow a Democratic amendment to continue to fund the government at current levels for the next month to come to the floor, known as a continuing resolution, or CR. The Democratic amendment is almost certain to fail.

Democrats opposed to the GOP bill would then be allowed to vote “no” on the broader spending bill, allowing them to seem like they’re voting against the GOP measure despite providing the needed support to bring it to the floor. Democrats have criticized the GOP plan, which would give Musk and Trump more power to slash the federal government and also cut $1 billion from Washington, D.C.’s local budget.

Nina Smith, a Democratic strategist, said this kind of wheeling and dealing is exactly why Americans have lost faith in the party.

This is what “vote blue no matter who” gets us. Weak, bad dems who have no affinity for any sort of party platform. They just printed a “D” next to their name.

yes but we have lost. For good, maybe. And ‘vote blue no matter who’ incremental change didnt work to hold the line against steady rightwing pressure and rightwing change year after year. We’ve slowly lost the society FDR created. The ideas are scorned by the party that created them.

It’s exactly like Collins and Manchin. They put up a big show of fighting and then just vote for it anyways.

The DNC must be abolished if this is their version of opposing the destruction of our civil service.

Seriously. They honestly think that they can help move along and destroy the country and that 1) everyone will forget in 18 months that they voted to capitulate and won’t remember if they voted for a shutdown, and 2) that they will STILL easily pick up wins in 2026 if they capitulate.

I actually can kind of see what they’re doing? So what’s the strategy here? Are they wanting to do the cloture and move for a vote to the floor? But then that would mean that they are hoping GOP is going to flip that would ultimately push to a shut down. They’re really hinging on GOP to have enough non-Trump loyalists to do that but I can’t really see it happening.

So yeah this kind of shit is also what is caving faith in for democrats.

You’re overthinking it. They don’t in any way expect Republicans to sink a Trump bill. Hell, they already have a yes vote from Fetterman. They just want to lose without it looking like full complicity.

The Republicans could have made this a majority vote. They get a few of those each year, but they didn’t want to blow one on a continuing resolution. Luckily the Democrats are here to give them that for free.

Great, we have a coalition in power. Except that coalition is formed of the Nazi party and the Democrats who capitulate to their every whim

If we somehow make it through this all these fucking spineless democrats need to be held accountable for enabling these traitors and recalled.
