Two people critical in hospital as officials in Bend say 16-year-old suspect shot dead by bystander
A 16-year-old shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher before he was shot dead by a community member, authorities said at an evening news conference.
The dead children at Silver Rail elementary school were aged five, eight and 11, officials said.
A seven-year-old and a 54-year-old were also hospitalized with critical injuries, according to police.
Why can’t these fuckers decide to shoot a fucking billionaire or some politician? Why is it always a school and in most cases elementary ones?
Because they’re failures and failures seek easy targets.
Just the daily small school shooting. Barely news worthy.
Its hard to imagine a shot 5 year old. Thats kindergarten age. About 40 pounds. You can still pick them up and carry them.
Obligatory

Doesn’t Oregon have some of the tightest gun control measures in the U.S.? Only shortly behind CA and WA states?
So like what are they going to do next? Ban bullets?
No state can reasonable restrict guns. They’re too easy to get anyway
Kind of like how the whole country is strict on felons owning guns, but they all have them anyway
The US needs federal gun reform to stop this, but we’ve decided dead children are worth it to have largely unrestrained gun ownership
but we’ve decided dead children are worth it to have largely unrestrained gun ownership
That doesn’t even help us when we find ourselves in the literal situation the founding fathers gave us the right for.
Oregon’s “strict” gun laws are basically a rumor. Measure 114 passed in 2022 and has never taken effect, lawsuits and lawmakers keep kicking it down the road.
So what we actually have is background checks. Now put 2+2 together and realize a 16 year old was never buying a gun legally in the first place. Whatever he used started as somebody’s legal purchase… let that sink in.
Meanwhile, the story everyone wants to sell you, once again, is the armed bystander. Which is exactly the kind of story that sells more guns, especially out here in Oregon. More guns sitting in trucks and closets where a teenager can get to them, a teenager who never got a background check, or a thief who can steal them and sell them to someone nobody background checked either.
Four people are dead. Three children. One teacher.
I’ll keep waiting for the part where the system and our “stricter” gun laws worked.
You know the “strictest “ gun laws are simply things like doing a background check on all gun transactions right?!
And those background checks clear very fast. I purchased a gun a few years ago and the background check cleared within a minute or two, it wasn’t significantly more difficult than buying a candybar.
It takes a minute or two just to fill the form out on the laptop…
Under half an hour walking in and out is realistic for the entire process, but even if your hitting a stop watch the second the employee hits “submit” and staring at a screen hooked up to a fiber Internet connection…
It’s not a “minute or two”
in the U.S.
theres your problem!
Just another day in America. Unfortunately.
Without knowing any details of this case and the actual situation that happened - at one point in time, a civilian with a firearm opened fire at another (minor) with a firearm because there was a possible danger scenario near a school. How did the “good guy” in this scenario know exactly that this was the right call to open fire, and not just another possible “good guy with a gun”?
In this case, he was evidently correct, well done! But it could easily have become a terrible blue-on-blue scenario as well.
To me, this single “good guy with a gun” scenario does not justify the fact that firearms are so widespread that the “bad guy” easily got his own, and became more deadly as a result.
the kid shot 4 people and you don’t understand why someone considered them a threat?
I agree that the good guy with a gun thing is generally a myth and usually causes more trouble than good, but in this case I don’t think it was a hard judgement call…
That assumes he saw a kid with a gun and did nothing while evaluating the situation and getting a 100% confirmation that he is indeed a crazy shooter. Which could really only happen when he saw this kid started shooting other kids. Then he calmly found a location where he would not accidentally hit any bystanders and without missing, terminated the shooter. If that sounds improbable for a real life situation, that’s why OP expressed his doubts.
Also do we want every random vigilante carrying and deciding who is or isn’t a threat in general? If a police officer busts in and hurts an innocent while taking this shooter down it’s already a huge enough can of worms… if this guy did, now is he criminally liable or are we giving random citizens qualified immunity?
Also do we want every random vigilante carrying and deciding who is or isn’t a threat in general?
There’s a shit ton of conservatives in this country, so the answer to that question is a massive FUCK NO. We can’t even trust them to do things that benefit themselves. I have very little faith in the humans around me when I’m out in public. I don’t want them playing judge, jury, and executioner.
Statistically gun owners are more likely to shoot themselves or their family than to use the gun in defense
That includes both accidental and intentional use of the gun
By the time officers arrived on scene, the suspected assailant had been shot and killed inside the school building. It is unclear who shot the suspect.
I suppose if you work in an elementary school these days, you know the Calvary isn’t coming in and you’re on your own. My guess is a teacher took down the shooter.
A very common mixup, but I think you mean cavalry. Calvary has a very different meaning.
Both are equally useless to the dead kids.
Wow for once there actually was a “good guy with a gun”. Probably not a great strategy anyway, because the death toll is too high still.
Very fucking sad case. 16 year old shooter and he picks an elementary school of all things? Fuck.
For context, Bend is a small city in eastern oregon.
Portland, Salem (the capital) and Eugene (2nd biggest city) are all in the williamette valley in the west. The eastern 2/3rds is mostly high alpine desert and very sparsely populated.
Bend is small, but the largest settlement in the east, and fairly wealthy. Eastern OR is basically Idaho, culturally, but Bend is ritzier and richer than the rest of East OR.
Bend is in central Oregon
Oregon is divided into East and West by the Cascades. Bend is east of the Cascades.
Not to be off topic, but we should start seeing a lot of these again nearing the midterms. You’ll hear a lot of lying about doing something about them, and after trump steals the midterms he’ll be clear to remove American gun ownership - can’t have the peons running around armed. Sounds like an insurrection.
The movement to take firearms by the far right has already started. They were very vocal when Pretti was shot that protesters and those on the left should not have firearms.
If we can’t have firearms to stop tyranny then wtf is the point of them.
Trump is a far-right conservative. His base is extremely pro-gun ownership
Your analysis is incorrect
Trump is a dictatorial autocrat. No dictator allows guns in the hands of the populace else they use the guns against the dictator.
This is proven time and time again.
