The box I cobbled together from old pallets, dirt is a mix of potting soil and local dirt spiced with chicken poo.
For the more observant viewers, you may notice that the closest ‘V’ is slimmer than the upper square – the pallets were a little short. I plan to plant smaller vegetables in those areas.
uhh… you realize the treated lumber you mentioned was a concern up until 2006 when treated lumber used chromium copper arsenate (CCA). note the arsenate as it would leach arsenic into the soil and yes, poison you, should you eat the dirt.
in 2006 CCA stopped being used except in very specialized projects, and even then you’d need special permission to use it. current treated lumber uses alkaline copper (ACQ) and copper azole (CBA) pressure treatments.
notice they don’t contain arsenic? they use copper as the primary treatment. copper, as in copper acetate, like what’s used in fungicide or used in insecticide.
so yes, don’t use treated lumber if you’re some how thrown back in time over 20 years ago.
this may shock you, but not everything is scary if you just take the time to adequately research it and properly educate yourself.
by the way, your dropped this.
CCA is banned for ground contact construction. Pallets don’t have that restriction, nor do you know that the pallet was made in the US where the law applies.
But CCA is the least of things to worry about. As I already said, pallets can be subject to spills of very dangerous chemicals.
you know what I hate the most about people like you?
you double down when someone calls you out on your bullshit and just move the goalposts.
You say that using treated lumber and pallets are just as dangerous. then, after being called out, you say treated lumber isn’t that bad.
I agree, using pallets as a building material is a risk, but looking at the shape and dimensions of the wood in that picture it looks like it was a pallet used to deliver tooling or some “finished” product.
but instead of assuming things, perhaps we should ask where the pallet was sourced?
WTF is wrong with you? Read my first post again. I didn’t say pallets are made from old CCA, I said they are subjected to all sorts of dangerous chemicals over their life.
Then you failed to read the follow up post where I didn’t say CCA isn’t dangerous. I reiterated my claim in my original post that it makes it more dangerous than cca.
Do you understand the difference between a mild poison and a dangerous poison? Your earlier post makes it clear you don’t understand that eating cockroachs is less dangerous than drinking benzene.
Hey numb nuts, more than one country exists, and I don’t know the laws in other places. I’m not gonna talk Specifically about one country where it’s potentially safe, because other people from other places will see it, and think it’s safe
Yes copper is safe, but some people like to avoid all chemicals in their garden, not a hard concept to understand.
….
It’s also funny you’re trying to mansplain lumber to a carpenter dude lmfao.
ex-carpenter here. got out because I didn’t want to be a fucked up mess of a human by the time I was 60. I’ll have to thank you though, you’ve reminded me of another reason why I left the profession.
I’m not even going to waste any more of my time on someone like you. clearly you’re an expert in what you do, being an asshole.
You’re the one that started talking about bugs when we were discussing chemicals. Look in the mirror mate. You’re the one that STARTED this BS, so don’t blame me for what you’re throwing incorrectly at carpenters.
You’re making the rest of us look bad, not the other way mate.
