I think this is my first time seeing acute brackets (< and >) to delineate quotations. It’s because they look like « and » but are easier to type?

In the books (Animorphs) they can speak telepathically when they’re morphed into animals, so the brackets are to show that form of communication. It’s often used in situations they can’t risk speaking aloud in, or to plan privately between each other.

Furthermore, though it was written for children back in the 90s, Animorphs is a very stark take on the horrors and ravages of war.

Also it’s worth noting that the author has a trans kid and loves the queer community very much.

It’s kind of blowing my mind rereading it and seeing how relevant it still feels, if not even more so, than it did back in the 90s. I can’t believe it’s a “kids” book, but at the same time I think every kid today really needs to read it.

I frequently wish that she’d do a reboot of it as an adult set of books instead, even if the main characters were still children.

The content is still amazing, but, it feels like 1/4 of the books is just re-explaining the basic plot because your target audience doesn’t have their own money and can’t be expected to have read any of the previous books.

There’s a podcast Sporadic Phantoms that kind of reimagined it like it was happening during the pandemic from the perspective of podcasting journalists that’s pretty interesting and fun (currently on hiatus though, but what’s been released is good!)

Thanks for the recommend! I’ll check it out! Gosh what a treat that would be if she rewrote/recompiled it.

In this series, many characters gained the power of telepathic communication, by assembling a list of nearby people who would receive it, and then sending it out with their brains. Those brackets denote that.
