In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn’t spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • So much of American political theory is based on the assumption that legislators would never willingly concede power, and I find it puzzling how rarely that assumption holds

The only way to depoliticize Washington’s courts is to return control over tax policy to the legislature. In 1933, five Washington Supreme Court justices seized control of taxation, delivering a political win for their wealthy supporters by overturning a popular income tax. That initial political decision created an unjust, unpredictable tax system and subsequently forced the Court to intervene in everything from school policy to capital gains taxation.

  • Good news: I am that kind of bisexual. The still is from an ESPN show called the Pat McAfee show, and they’re doing a segment on college football (which I call gridiron because football is a broad umbrella of sports and I like to specify which flavor I’m talking about, like soccer or rugby or gridiron because I follow multiple sports called football). In college football, because there are too many teams to have them all play each other, the best teams are determined by polls, which ask journalists to rank the best teams. The show is claiming their poll, which is just some dude named Tone, I gather, is “above average” – i.e. you’ll get a better sense of which college football teams are good or bad then from other polls. I am making fun of college football fans because they call their commentators “stooges,” which usually means they’re not very smart, and the crawl misspells the word “program.”

  • I know and I understand your struggle. It’s feels kind of like she’s breaking kayfabe – previously, she was careful enough with her actions you could think that Taylor from real life was the same as Taylor from her songs, but they’ve gotten far enough apart I can’t conflate them anymore. For many musicians, that wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but so much of Swift’s empire is built on the sense that she gives glimpses and hints and peeks and clues into her most vulnerable places that I struggle to see how she moves forward. For me, I think I’ve moved on from being a Swiftie and now it’s more that there is a bunch of music I still enjoy, and a savvy businesswoman I’m curious about.

  • While it’s framed in terms of MLS and the Sounders, I thought the metrics might be interesting to a broader audience, although it’d likely take some tweaking to apply to FFP rather than the MLS salary cap

Before we begin to take a look at these stats, let me frame them with the question you should ask yourself when looking at each one.

TERS+: How stable is a team’s “core” over a period of time (we’ll just be looking at full-seasons)

    TER$+: What’s the quality of a team’s “core”

TERP$+: Is a team under or overperforming their true level based on their quality and health of its “core?”

TERP$+ Differential: Should a team have expected to perform the way they?

  • Increasing the amount of allowed charter flights is, to my mind, the single most cost effective way to raise the quality of the product on the field

More charter flights? Of course. Even the lone GM who does not believe they should be unlimited wants more than the current allowance of six legs (three round trips) of charter flights.

Many GMs made business arguments: Commercial travel could add an entire night of hotels, food, on-ground transportation and other expenses based on the availability of direct flight times, one GM said. Several said the league would benefit from creating a partnership like MLS has with Sun Country Airlines as the official charter service of the league.

  • Not so! October’s been very mild and the hiking is still very good, even if it’s a little late in the season for Rainier

Away from hockey, she wants to see more of the city. “Honestly, just exploring Seattle a little bit more,” she said. “I wasn’t there for that long last year, so I feel like there’s still so much I haven’t seen.”

A hike tops the list, though the timing may not work. “I really want to go on a hike, but now it might already be too late again,” she said. “At the end of last year, I wanted to go to Mount Rainier National Park, but there was still a lot of snow. I think now the timing might be bad again. So, that’s something I would want to do, but I might have to wait until after the season again.”
