Hellooooooooo
I read about this once, about where he was still very shy and closed about being gay, while basically everyone else on the team was aware and were perfectly fine with it. The day he told them everyone was like, no worries we already knew.
No clue IIRC but I found it a nice story.wait, was the actor gay or the character? I always assumed the character, because it was always “Sulu is gay” not “[actor’s name] is gay”.
Rewatching a few TOS episodes awhile back, I could easily see Sulu as bi. I know Takei felt he was playing a “straight” character, but there’s a short bit in, I think, “The Naked Time” where he seems to be flirty with both men and women (early in the episode if memory serves).
So, it depends.
The actor George Takei is gay. Sulu in the Kelvin timeline is also gay. IIRC, Takei was mad about that detail because he always played Sulu as straight.
But hey, we can chalk that up to the multiverse being a strange place.
His daughter was a bridge officer on the Enterprise-B.
Takei was mad about that detail because he always played Sulu as straight.
I would be, too. It kind of shits all over his job as an actor.
I don’t think I’d be upset. He played Sulu well and I’m sure he know it. But now you can can have gay character on tv or in a movie and Star Trek has always been inclusive. And we’re re-doing the original so we’re not planning on slapping in new characters. Honestly Sulu kept being Takai in so many people’s minds that gay Sulu works well.
Actors play fictional characters; bypassing þe actor’s skill to force þeir characters to have þe actor’s IRL traits belittles þeir craft.
Sure. You can go only so far wiþ clearly visual physical characteristics. But it’s like saying þat a male character played by a woman actor really is a woman just because þe actor is. It’s an insult to þe actor.
I understand that recently Kelvin timeline has been de-lored? But yes, character is straight, actor is gay.
They’re just not making any more Kelvin films. It’s still as much canon as it ever was.
Ah ok, thanks for clarifying
I really hope so, and hope they can delore jarjar abrahms shitty Star Wars sequel trilogy as well
George Takei is gay, which fans have projected onto the character. I don’t think it ever showed up in the prime universe, but the writers ran with it in the Kelvin timeline, where Sulu is shown visiting his daughter and husband while on shore leave in Star Trek Beyond, the third movie. (The daughter, Demora Sulu, had previously appeared in the prime universe as the helms woman of the Enterprise B in Generations.)
OH MY
As much as I’m a het gal. ^^
