    I’ve accepted a job offer. It’s a big paycut, and finances are going to be very very very tight for a year or two. I’m going to have to make lifestyle changes, but it is probably time to grow up and do that really.

    I’m nervous about handing in my notice. The person I’ll have to hand in the notice to is a fucking nightmare. She screamed in the face of a previous quitter, and made everybody rearrange the office seating so that people quitting couldn’t sit near each other. She’s going to be a pain in the arse for months.

    But, positive. Feel like I’m making actual choices that I care about for once!

    • Once you hand in notice you can start playing games so that they hustle you out the door with alacrity; you won’t have to stay for months.

      First, the old tried and true tool: work to rule. Do your job, as described, and no more.

      Second, the incompetence gambit. Do your job BADLY. Do what’s asked of you, but make dumb mistakes, do things slowly, “accidentally” hand in first draughts (with the correct draught already on your computer so you can produce it when they spot the problem…if they spot the problem in the first place!). You know, that kind of thing. If you’re training your replacement, key pieces of misinformation are always fun to insert.

      Third, make sure all communications are in something more substantial than speech. If they tell you something vocally, follow up with email summarizing the conversation and what action items you took from the conversation. Ask them to confirm that your understanding was correct so there’s records instead of he said/she said. (This is both protection for yourself and fun.) Tinpot dictators really hate being held to account (it’s why they favour only verbal communications!), so torture her.

      Finally you can play the tardy/absentee game. Come to work increasingly late. Leave work increasingly early. When the complaints start, you can make a subgame with the third technique, driving your nemesis to distraction as you roll this activity back … only to roll it forward again to test resolve and boundaries.

      I mean what’s she going to do? Fire you?

      Sounds like good riddance. If she yells in your face just turn around and walk away. She can’t fire you anymore.

        Yeah you’re right, I should’ve quit so many times over the last two years but I needed the money and I am more than a little uncomfortable with the thought of her being an absolute arsehole for the duration of my notice period

          Don’t beat yourself up over it. As you say you’ve made the choice now. If it’s at a bigger employer you can still report her to HR as your last act even if you’ve resigned. And again no-one can really retaliate since you’ll be outta there in a couple of weeks.

    I released my very first song on Apple Music and the other major music streaming platforms. It’s live on Apple Music rn. I don’t care if it is never found or listened to. It’s just so cool knowing that anyone could listen to it. I’ve another track lined up for release and have music videos for both.
