there are multiple versions of the clip and the associated lore floating around and if you don’t spend enough time with what happened at the time you can easily be convinced of a variety of viewpoints

Jeff Widener, the photographer who took this photo, describes the protests. He wasn’t feeling well because a protester had smashed him in the head with a rock. His description starts at 2m30s.

They did, however, flatten many other students with tanks during that protest.

They didn’t, they beat them to death in the side streets and disappeared known leaders, get it right!

Also the diplomatic cable that refers to armor units attacking the protestors in the Square which was denied by journalists on site specified APCs, jeez.

Yeah, in the West they would have just rolled right over the top of him.

(Incidentally, it’s interesting that westerners post this - truncated - clip almost constantly, yet most of them have never even seen a photo of Rachel Corrie)

Reminder that Israel crushes so many people under tanks that it traumatizes their soldiers, and slavish devotion to them is bipartisan.

If u break your leg - is hospital going to turn u away?
If u don’t have insurance - are u going to owe 200k for broken leg?

If you cant pay for treatment - do they take your house?

I think u maybe confused about what universal health care is.

          • If u break your leg - is hospital going to turn u away?

They will do the minimum amount of care to stabilize you and if you can’t pay, send you away.

If u don’t have insurance - are u going to owe 200k for broken leg?

Not 200K. Not even in RMB. A broken leg will be a few hundred. But yes, if you do not have insurance you’re paying.

If you cant pay for treatment - do they take your house?

If you can’t pay for treatment you may just die. A student of mine got hit by a bus and took tremendous head trauma. The surgery for this was 30,000RMB. He was from the countryside so he and his family didn’t have 30,000 RMB. He got no treatment beyond basic stabilization until his classmates and teachers gathered up a substantial portion of that 30,000. Then they saved his life.

            In. That. Order.

I think u maybe confused about what universal health care is.

I think you may have no clue what you’re talking about vis a vis China.

Now all that being said, if you’re employed at all, by anybody, anywhere, you automatically have health insurance, mandated by law. And, being state-run insurance firms, they’re not the utter steaming shitpile that American “health insurance” is. But if you’re not employed, or if you’re self-employed, you either get insurance on your own, or you pay out of pocket. There is no universal health care.

            P.S.

An AMERICAN telling a CANADIAN that she doesn’t know what universal health care is is hilarious. Also, an American telling someone who’s been living in China for almost a quarter of a century how China really works is even more hilarious.

What’s next? Are you going to tell me what the city of Wuhan is really like?

              • It’s funny. I’ve been called a “tankie” too for stating truths about China that are uncomfortable to its critics.

It’s almost as if “tankie” is a word that has no intrinsic meaning outside of “you are someone I disagree with and I need an epithet”. Pretty much the same as every other political epithet this way.

So I pretty much take anybody using the term “tankie” unironically and give them as much credence as I give anybody who uses words like “woke” or “DEI” or even “sheeple” unironically. I assume they’re a) ignorant cunts, and b) assholes.

Americans (in 1775): Declares war with one of the most powerful empires in history over taxes

The French: Decapitates the upper classes due to hoarding wealth and creating class imbalance

Haitians: Fights against their former masters in the name of freedom and the end of slavery

The French (again): Fights back against one of the most cruel regimes in history to free their occupied homeland from Nazi rule

Americans (now): “Oh I hope that if the message on my sign is passive aggressive enough the fascists will leave the government out of shame.”

Yeah. The smugglers were making bank though.
Its kinda the rule that the government is filled with old mafia once they realize they can make a lot of money being the government.

So I guess in this case we need the companies that are acting as mafia to want the change. Which brings us back to the wealthy.

I’m sorry that my government is making a mess for you and yours. But please don’t think that there is a lack of action. There have been basically nonstop (very liberal and mostly toothless) protests since before the election even, but the news refuses to report on them. Furthermore, there is a LOT going on from folks who would rather not advertise how they are resisting.

A resistance to a fascist government cannot, by it’s nature, be public facing, so you’ll never know everything that people are sacrificing and doing every day. But they are. We are.

I am Canadian. You continue to not act and I am just as fucked as you. We will mount a resistance though. Many are already economically by supporting a very prominent buy Canada campaign, cross border travel has decreased by ~40% over a year ago, our government has instituted reciprocal tarrifs and laid out a plan to defend the country I am certain.

Many individuals are openly preparing for war. Taking classes, buying guns, training for first aid, joining mutual aid orgs, saving money to fly their kids out of country if they can, when it becomes necessary. I am doing my part at home thank you.

Funny that we can see what’s necessary as can the rest of the world but you are blind to it and fight against recognising it for what it is.

          Here’s the Canadian…

I’m sorry but you will likely be lumped in with the regime when the world comes knocking, as inaction is seen as blatantly approving of the actions of your dictator. Just a little bit from Nuremberg.

            Americans are protesting

            https://bsky.app/profile/50501movement.bsky.social

Now those are organized weekly, there’s also a continuous protest starting in DC on May https://maydaymovementusa.org/

Bernie Sanders also has Fight the Oligarchy Tour that was highly successful even in the very red states.

The biggest problem though is that this time majority of media bent the knee, and tries to not report, and when they do, minimize the attendance.

It seems like that unfortunately also affects international coverage.

You are governed by a dictator who has unlimited power enshrined by your highest court. He will not be stopped without agression. He is not the type to step down I’m sure you know.

My very liberal, anti gun Canadian friends are literally training at the range every week right now and just bought their first guns. They aren’t the only ones.

I’d encourage you to step up your game.

Got it. So you want to tell people how they should use violence while you sit around pretending to be doing something. How long do you need to sit around & prepare. Should I plan on seeing your declaration of war in the next week or so?

Don’t feel bad you’re lazy and can’t manage to stand up for yourself. It’s ok. The camps will be fun. Just like summer when you were a kid.

When I have the opportunity to use violence against incursion by your fascist regime into my country I will. As if yet I have no reason to be violent. We’re a peaceful country for the most part.
