I’m visiting Korea atm. Every form of public transit is totally silent at all times. No one talks and it is rude to do so.
I went to the library in Dalston last year and the STAFF were shouting and laughing. I couldn’t believe it.
Can we start with my neighbour’s house please? Preferably between 10pm - 8am on Friday and Saturday nights.
Also, they need to still be free to the public.
And preferably, have food or drinks instead of books.
Like, a really quiet coffee shop.
I think it’s weird that the meme is about places where everyone needs to shut the fuck up but half the comments are about churches and other places where there is a keynote speaker.
No really we mean everyone.
It used to be most public transit I used until the fucking fools who endlessly blast millisecond Tik Tok videos came along. Every bus now requires a guillotine.
Imma bus driver and I enforce the no speaker rule. Idgaf I’ll pull over the bus and wait, kick people out. I get paid by the hour. My favorite is the kids who pretend they can’t hear or see you.
I pull the bus over and say we’re not moving till the speakers off and they’ve acknowledged the no speaker rule. They keep up their ignoring me tactic for about 90seconds, then the other passengers turn on them. 50/50 they get off the bus/ or show the barest amount of contrition and actually acknowledge the no speaker rule.
We need more bus drivers like this.
I love you
You’re too late, @fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com already stole my heart!
Love you
Love you too!
Not all heroes wear capes 💯
I agree but has that person gone to library lately? Growing up, they were quiet places; now even the librarians talk loudly and don’t stop others from talking loudly, at least in NJ. :(
That’s funny, because people aren’t quiet in libraries anymore. They’re just normal spaces, now. No quieter than a bookstore.
My library has a quiet floor, but the rest are good places for students to get together to study and do group projects.
There’s also study rooms you can borrow if you need a door between you and the world.
Yeah ours has signs saying you dont need to be quiet. It’s just a public space. That said, the layout creates places which are naturally quieter.
Mine has levels of expected quietness, from kid’s corner to stuff m study rooms
Whoa, where is that?
We need ultralibraries for the peeps sensitive to auditory stimulus.
I ended up paying to go to a private library a while back and it was blissfully quiet. Wasn’t much either, like $10/month.
Semi-related: I miss social distancing so much! I want my personal space back! 😄
It’s 2026. You don’t have to stfu at libraries anymore. You do have to be somewhat chill though.
Seriously, we need regular, organized secular congregations where elected community leaders lead discussions on building stronger communities and read aloud from books about building stronger communities. A library would make a good venue.
Back in the day, cigar makers used to hire people to read newspapers aloud while they worked.
Finally, a job I’m qualified for. I can read.
But can you read in mellifluous tones that bring joy to the ear?
Attend a Quaker Meeting
Aren’t those all about talking things through, though?
MfW is not, it is mostly silent. I get a huge benefit from meditation, I learned.
MfB which is how to run things is a different experience. They don’t go by consensus, they seek unity. That takes a long time.
I suppose churches are good for one thing.
they tend to open the doors when someone is about to talk on an amplified microphone
Just left a concert. There was a small group of people yelling to each other to talk over the music.
I was not happy about it. They finally STFU after a few minutes, tho.Oh no, don’t do that. Lemmy does not respond well when asked to pipe down for a goddamn minute.
