And for anyone asking “Why are we boycotting/blocking lemmy.ml?” Here’s a quick recap:

Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it’s off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).

If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the “Tankie Triad” (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they’ve positioned lemmy.ml as the “flagship” instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.

Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse’s overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that “They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit”

I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse “Voat 2.0”.

So if you haven’t joined the boycott yet, join today and help us foster a better healthier Lemmy-verse!

You cannot block an entire instance in Lemmy today. The best you can do is block seeing posts from that instance in your timeline. The users are still free to send you death threats. The Lemmy devs have promised this feature later in the year, but given how it will likely be used against their .ml instance most liberally, and they will have fewer victims to attack, I am dubious it ever gets released.

Usually clients have some option to do it but the steps might be different based on what client you’re using.

Right now I’m on Voyager for example and if let’s say I wanted to block your instance I could click your profile and click the options. One of the options on that screen is “View Instance” and from there I have the option to block the instance.

There’s also post filters but I know a lot less about setting those up. But iirc one of the things you can filter posts by is the instance the post comes from.

Lemmy .ml is partly why I switched to an instance which defederates them. The admin and mod behavior over there is gross. If it weren’t run by the Lemmy devs it would be widely blocked.

Option 1: Move to an instance that doesn’t federate with them, like lemmy.cafe.

Option 2: Go to the settings page on the website, and block the instance. This will stop you from seeing comms on that instance, but you will still see comments and posts by their users in other comms.

Option 3: Client-specific. If you’re using another client besides the default website, most of them have some way to block and hide all users from an instance as well, usually somewhere in the settings.

They make it extremely difficult, while still remaining on Lemmy.

PieFed makes it trivially easy. As do the older apps Sync and Connect. Otherwise you are looking at something like a custom Ublock Origin filter rule, or starting your own instance (or joining one that has already defederated from them, which almost none do).

The “instance block” is sadly misnamed as it does not block the instance, nor its users, and would be better thought of as a community mute.

PieFed is awesome for other reasons - it has a ton of features that Lemmy lacks, and is even working on features that Reddit itself did not bother with (notice how all of its features for the last many years were designed solely to increase profits, rather than enhance user experiences?). Its being built using Python rather than the extremely difficult to use Rust is really catapulting its development into overdrive.

You had it right originally. You can’t do what he’s asking for, which is unfortunately something that Lemmy doesn’t support today. See my response to him. The exclamation syntax lets you make a link that, when viewed by viewers on different home instances, will take them to a view of that community on their own home instance. Can’t be done (today, anyway) for posts or comments, which is what you’re linking to.

      He can’t.

Unfortunately, lemmy only supports instance-agnostic links (like, that are written to link to a user’s own home instance) to a community. It has no syntax permitting for this with links to posts or comments.

If you’re using Firefox, you can install the Instance Assistant for Lemmy & Kbin, and it will modify pages on non-home instances to have a button in the right sidebar that will take you to the post on your home instance. With that, after you follow a link to a non-home-instance post, you can bounce to the corresponding post on your home instance.

Wut? Reality fits no ideology. If it did, it wouldn’t be an ideology, just reality. If capitalism ever worked as intended. It hasn’t been since the 19th century. And I think that’s a pretty specious claim itself. Leninism hasn’t made good on it’s claims either. They both suck and have been disproven. Society has changed, technology has changed. Perhaps it’s time to try something new?

That’s true, reality has no ideology.

But in reality, capitalist countries like America, Canada, Germany, South Korea, and so on, are prosperous.

Meanwhile, look at communist countries, Russia, China, Cuba. They all are shitholes.

              look at communist countries, Russia

Russia stopped being a part of the Soviet Union around 35 years ago. Capitalist reform (more specifically ‘shock therapy’) led to huge increases in child mortality, the establishment of mail-order brides and child prostitution, and the rise of its oligarchs. Things were so bad in the 90s and early 2000s that someone as horrible as Putin was considered an improvement, that’s how bad capitalism was for Russia.

I am critical of China, it has serious problems, but I don’t understand how someone can call it a shithole (and not say the same about America). Let alone suggesting one of the biggest economies in the world is not prosperous. It’s not the 80s anymore. There are valid critiques but that’s not one of them - if anything the ‘communist states’ are renowned for rapidly transforming multiple pre-industrial backwaters into world superpowers.

South Korea is an odd choice, given it’s already up to its Sixth Republic due to various coups and dictatorships and, if I’m not mistaken, its last three presidents were impeached.

None of them aren’t communist, most of them aren’t shit holes either. Just traditionally way more oppressive than the US. Though we’re racing to catch up.

Your just parroting the same propaganda the rest of us grew up with. Again not saying Russia and China are good. But if you think Russia and China etc are shitholes. Outside of the heavy social repression I’d like to know what differentiates them from us.

“We can’t trade with one capitalist country, therefore our economy has collapsed” is not a stunning refutation of capitalism.

I’m more inclined to believe that Cuba’s well-documented internal economic problems are to blame rather than regarding it as necessary for a socialist state to be supported by capitalists in order to exist at a decent standard of living.

from my understanding, exploding heads people largely went to nostr, but once they realised there was no one but annoying crypto people there some went back to the fediverse. They chose HC because they claimed to be politically neutral.
HC wasn’t supposed to be explicitly conservative, an admin said they made it because they liked lemmy’s apps, and it was originally on wordpress.

Of course, trying to appear politically netural almost always ends up favoring conservatives.

Not exactly. It isn’t strongly tied to conservatives in any way. No one can be politically neutral. But what we generally refer to political neutrality is simply adopting the language and position of those largely in charge. While not challenging them. Whether they are Fascist conservatives oppressive leninists Etc. Powerful groups often demand neutrality on their terms. Whereas if you govern well. Your violent radicals believe that Wednesday is the best day to eat cupcakes while the normal people believe it’s Tuesday. And they will give you a talking to should you disagree. But nothing serious.

I’m a lemmy.ml user and I can confirm you won’t see any communist propaganda on our instance. Communism was defined by Marx as stateless, and is therefore counterrevolutionary bourgeois propaganda. Us Marxist-Stalinists only support authoritarian socialism. If anyone tells you .ml is communist, they’re spreading lies to make us look bad.

In a recent discussion in the Matrix chat, it was mentioned that donations to support development have recently fallen off quite steeply. I mentioned my reason for not donating anymore is because I can’t support anyone who runs an instance like .ml. @nutomic@lemmy.ml said I could donate directly to him since he doesn’t do as much moderation over there, but also mentioned that donations for development go towards server costs for .ml. Having observed a few different types of small team dynamics in my time, my speculation from a distance is that nutomic is the sensible one who does the bulk of the actual work, and dessalines is the other one.

He kind of has my sympathy and I do like Lemmy as software and it is clearly a good thing, but at the same time, at this point in the world if someone on your team is working to silence anyone who talks about Russia in unflattering terms, you can go fuck yourself as far as I am concerned. I am happy their instance is failing and I hope it keeps on failing until they stop doing legwork for murder, tyranny, rape, and torture. Honestly, “I wish my internet place had more users and people didn’t make fun of me so much” is a pretty mild negative consequence to experience from that.

I’m in the modlog a lot so I can confirm that that is true, however, like @fiddlesticks@lemmy.dbzer0.com he shares a transphobic flavor of their mindset sooo yea

but also mentioned that donations for development go towards server costs for .ml. Hell no.

LMAO “Don’t directly to me and you won’t have to worry about it! Butttt it’ll still go to the exact thing you’re opposed to.”

If we all stop donating to Lemmy just because the devs are being tankies, how will Lemmy survive?

I don’t want to go back to the bot-ridden reddit with its elon-simping CEO.

That’s a fair question, and maybe we should be concerned. They’re already saying development will stop without more donations.

There are alternatives. Projects have died or been forked before because of the actions of their developers. OrganicMaps comes to mind (they are both a fork of something, and recently a new fork was started to detach from the developers (I can’t think of the name).

I’m just one person, but I’m not going to give .ml any financial support, you can be sure of that.

If the devs being tankies kills this space then it doesn’t matter.

I like Lemmy too, but i don’t like it enough to financially support transphobic fascists.

Every service or product we use is owned by powerful people far worse than the Lemmy developers.

If we all boycott lemmy and let it burn then we have go back to profit oriented bot infested social media at the end. By design lemmy isnt owned by lemmy devs and we can block their instance by a single click.

How are pro-genocide fake-communists (russia is an authoritarian capitalist state, China is a capitalist society) any better than American oligarchs?

The publicly stated dictatorship instead of the still struggling democracy is the main difference.

China has a dictator who will erase you if you step out of line.

In the US I step out of line every day and am still mostly protected by free speach laws, if the fascist regime ever tries to hurt me or my family/friends I also am allowed to own guns to defend them with.

Cutting off funding because of political differences is stupid. Would you rather this go down the same path as Reddit?

It’s not political differences, really. Go ahead and be communist, I don’t care. It’s the heavy handed moderation style. It’s a 1 sided instance and anything to the contrary gets deleted and a time limited ban. They go against exactly what they think they stand for.

You are doing your mental gymnastics to side with people like that. Not a nice look .

And you are using the platform made by .ml admins so you are doing the same. I’m not condoning anyone’s politics or opinions. Just be morally consistent. If you don’t support their views then why are you using a platform they developed?

Because i was not aware those pieces of shit developed it. Because i am on a federation made by people those monsters want all to be genocided and im not paying a single dime. Thus they are working for free to improve the platform i’m on. Platform that is used to counter russian propaganda.

No, but I want the funds to only be used for Lemmy development, not for their tankie server. They are the ones that make it impossible to do one without the other.

A bit hypocritical to continue benefitting off of their labor and time by using the platform but their political views is where you draw the line, yet you continue to use the platform. Maybe if you actually believed in what you said you would stop using the platform and go back to reddit. But do go on and preach from your virtue signaling high horse about how paying $30/per month for their server coet (which they use as a testing bed) is too much for you to handle.

If the political difference is between building a multistory carpark or underground carpark with a park on the ground level, sure, it’s stupid. If the political difference is “Russia does nothing wrong, Ukraine deserved to get invaded because of nazi” and “Russia is to blame for being the aggressor”, then it’s definitely not.

You’re allowed to fund propaganda machine, and people allowed to not do it.
