I hadn’t heard anything about this, but it sounds pretty interesting. The Guardian’s description makes it sound a little like 'F for Fake," which is pretty great.

Absolute madness. I am huge Nathan fan and I was setting my expectations low due to all the hype. It certainly lived up and left my jaw on the floor by the end. Holy hell there’s so many layers to this movie… I’m also glad I watched it in theater. It had been a few years since I’ve been to the movies and this one was def an experience.

The provenance sounds good but something about all the hype around watching this super closeup of a clearly ND person rubs me the wrong way.

Idk maybe that’s the “point” of the documentary but feels exploitative. Like afaik fielder is not a serious documentarian, he makes social commentary x comedy stuff. I’ll see what people say once the hype dies down but yeah… something about it just

I think my compassion is better spent on the thousands of people she medically defrauded with fake blood test results. To be honest, I think it’s condescending to other neurodivergent people to use that as any sort of a excuse for the shit she pulled.

Thankyou. As someone who has actually been actually diagnosed with actual autism and ADHD, it fucks me right off when people act like total cunts then claim it’s because of either of those conditions, just as much as it does when they claim it’s because of their starsign. Her acts were hers alone, not mine.

I think that’s an incredibility compassionate take, and for that I instantly and unconditionally love you.

I think compassionate people tend to trip on something, and I think you’re tripping on it right now. I think other people trip in the opposite direction. Let me explain:

When you watch a nature doc where a lion hunts some poor baby antelope, maybe you’re rooting for the antelope. It just wants to live. But the lion has to eat. It’s incompatible. Just to be a dick I always say to my wife “think of the the baby lions that’ll starve if the lion doesn’t catch an antelope!”.

They’re fundamentally incompatible outcomes. You can accept that, choose who you’re going to root for (or neither), remain empathetic to both. It isn’t NECESSARY to reject empathy for one to root for the other. It’s your mind playing a trick on you to save you from feeling bad for whoever gets screwed. You can sit with something bittersweet.

Is this putting ND on blast? YEP. Is it providing a vehicle for people being abused by people with ND to recognize that? YEP.

Fundamentally incompatible outcomes. It’s completely reasonable to hold a position like “I hate that this puts ND on blast, but ultimately this leads to the better outcome”. I think “this is the better outcome… And people with a legitimate disorder can eat shit” is not.

watching this super closeup of a clearly ND person rubs me the wrong way.

It is fair game to expose the manner in which this neurodivergent person is dangerous to others, and warn the world about her, with specifics. Even if it hinges on an intimate look at the details.

I mean I was about her, she seems to believe in her own grift which has allowed her to defraud people for years.

Anyway, the story isn’t the point. It’s how it’s made so entertaining that irks me. Like people are vibrating with excitement over it. It’s… Weird.

She’s a manipulative psychopath. She had children to try and get a more lenient sentence.

Anyway, the story isn’t the point. It’s how it’s made so entertaining that irks me.

The cringe humor is completely intertwined with her methods of deception, though. The exact same way that neurotypicals will often self censor so as to not be rude or make things awkward turns into a vulnerability, a vector for her style of ultra-sincere deception.

So introducing a neurodivergent comedian who doesn’t have that self-censorship instinct turns the awkwardness on itself and shows us something genuinely new about the subject. And it’s funny in the same way that the most cringeworthy comedy is funny, but that still serves an important non-comedic purpose in this film.

Oh I think Fielder was more sincere in season 2 of The Rehearsal than you might be attributing here.

I dunno, I think that he’s been getting more and more serious/sincere with each project he’s done. I can’t comment on this doc quite yet as I’m seeing it tomorrow, but I expect to be impressed either way.

Bruh, I can’t even remember for sure the last time I went to the actual movies. Like a movie theater.

It was definitely pre-covid and I think it may have been to see Jordan Peele’s US

Anyway, I went to see this last night and holy shit I think this might be the best movie I’ve ever seen. And I’m so glad I saw it in a movie theater on opening night.

    This movie is An Experience.

It started out kinda slow and within the first 20 mins or so I was worried I might end up regretting choosing to spend 3 hours watching a movie about Elizabeth Holmes.

In hindsight, I wonder if that was a trick/illusion of the magician himself, intentionally trying to play with the audience’s mind. Bc almost right after I had that thought I was 100% locked in for the remainder of the movie.

I can’t remember ever sitting through a movie in a theater before where at various points throughout a single movie, my fellow audience members had such a range of shared reactions: laughter, shocked audible gasps, angry wtfs, disgust, empathy. Then when it was all over, (and I mean this in the least sacrilegious way possible) the audience all got up and left in a dazed and heavy silence that I seriously can only compare to my memory of seeing Passion of the Christ.

    Anyway, go see this movie.

Nathan Fielder does what he does best, but also gives shades of Alfred Hitchcock. I know that doesn’t sound like a real description, but it is.

I saw it today and it was great. I really appreciate a movie that actually leaves room for interpretation. Every 30 minutes or so it felt like the narrative was being turned on its head and it kept me at the edge of my seat like few movies of this length have. Definitely a movie I’ll be thinking about for a while.

You’re right to be a little bit skeptical that a movie could actually be as groundbreaking as people seem to be claiming. But I think it lives up to the hype. It’s a documentary, but it’s a documentary like no other I’ve ever seen. It’s a Nathan Fielder work, and there are all sorts of Nathan Fielder characteristics to this film, but the collision between the subject of this documentary and Nathan Fielder’s style is just such an interesting lighting in a bottle type situation, like when physicists finally develop the technology to smash subatomic particles at high momentums against each other, and seeing what comes out of it.

I can’t see how something like this could ever be made again.

The breathless hype this movie is receiving is making me angry, and I’m not entirely certain why.

Possibly because on a superficial level it comes off as another celebration of an evil doer who actively did truly shitty things, and we’re all bone fucking tired of that.

I only say that because for myself I’ve been skipping the above Guardian article for several days based on the subject alone, and that is my own reason why. Good to hear there’s more to the movie than that. I like a good documentary, maybe this will be worth watching when it gets to streaming.

Lance Oppenheim documentaries are usually very well received, and this one is co-directed and hosted by a very popular celebrity comedian following a famously crazy person. It’s kind of the perfect recipe to make a very popular and well liked documentary.

I should’ve asked, what made her more crazy than the other billionaires, because yeah she was nuts. Facebook man has an obsession with, and is emulating Julius Caesar.

I don’t think Holmes was worse than the other billionaires, truly. A part of me wishes she got away with her grift, that she could’ve taken the money and fled because all she did was scam rich people. That’s also why she is in prison, while the other billionaires are running free.

This will probably piss you off more, but it’s one of those things where it’s kind of impossible to predict what your expectations should be going in and that’s a big part of why it’s enjoyable.

Don’t want to spoil it for you but you should leave the movie with broad questions about truth, human nature, memory, and bias/perception in general moreso than gaining definitive answers about the subject of the documentary.

Will you be able to go about life just fine if you don’t see it or wait until it’s streaming? Yes.

Is it a surprisingly good movie that’s worth the cost of a ticket and 3 hours of attention? Yes.

Honestly would like to know if you do end up seeing it and manage to still hold on to that singular feeling of anger while sitting through this movie.
