This is the only country where police probably really fear for their lives (not talking about the bullshit US police spew to get themselves out of trouble when they kill someone).

They should. For what I’ve seen in the news cycle, protests started peacefully then the police started crippling children. I mean, a 14 year old lost an arm to police brutality. That’s when the rest of the country raised up in arms and started attacking the cops and rioting. So far all political statements, starting with Macron, have only called to prosecute children for property damage calling them “extreme left violence”. While the cops maiming children, who were just asking for more teachers with fair pay, are being protected.

Sad to see innocent businesses getting destroyed. Sad to see schools not being modernized as per request of students and protesters. Sad to see government not doing due diligence to listen to their people, especially children.

Happy to see people protesting not only for 5 hours. Happy to see repercussions of not being heard. Happy to see that France shows the whole world how one should protest.

Which innocent business got destroyed? I’m not doubting some did, but I hear that narrative during every protest, and I have seen them smashing Louis Vuitton and other corps windows but leaving local businesses untouched. That’s how it’s usually been where I’m at when this stuff happens, a business seen as supporting the police or CVS/Target etc got attacked but the local store next door run by cooler people was untouched even without boarded windows in 2020.

Like the Police, a few “bad apples” will show themselves but, this is people protesting that schools and education in France are underfunded, dilapidated and children do not have materials to learn while they are in cold, drafty classrooms with leaking roofs. I see an increase in funding for schools and education in France’s very near future. There is a a good reason why the retirement age in France was not raised even after the government announced that the age of retirement / pension entitlement would be raised. Anyone calling this rioting is a class traitor or a shill.

Are you in the US? You can get from any point of France to the capital relatively quick through driving or transit. People in the US do stuff but it’s tough to have numbers in the streets like this when we are so spread out and the police will shoot you on the way.

Not saying we should limit those essentials, but you do mention a phenomena that we should be aware of, and that’s that any damage to economics at any level tends to have a ripple effect, whereby normal people wind up feeling the pain in some form. Could be as mundane as layoffs from “cost cutting,” in response to the need for more security, or loss of assets, or anything really.

The big problem France has, is that they are broke and since apparently no country in the world is willing to tax major coorperations and barely tax billionaires it will be very difficult to keep low retirement ages or bring all the schools in France up to reasonable standards.

Most protests was people walking, being happy, singing and talking. What everyone is talking i that 10% shit happening.

Please, be aware that most of the time people are peaceful. That what everyone have to stick in their brain.

And French police is doing the same. They even have an official name for barricading. They trap a group of peaceful protestors into an alley, then send a provocateur dressed as a civilian to start violence. They use the violence as an excuse to detain and injure everyone trapped inside the barricade. When the battle breaks out, they use that to further repress the peaceful protestors.

It’s a worldwide established practice by all police forces.

Good for them, wouldn’t you have fun fighting back? We are ruled by wealthy vampires, I would rather die fighting them than help prop up this global system of genocide, endlessly exploiting every working person. There wouldn’t be wrecking if there was a real dialogue between people and the rulers. The protests never start like this. They get together and ask for what they want, then the police started beating the fuck out of them.

I just watched a clip, I’ve seen it in person before though more than once, where someone was just standing there alone doing nothing as the police groups ran by. Around a dozen cops threw him to the ground, stomped on him, beat him with sticks and he died. They want to kill us. So whatever fighting back they feel is necessary is what should be done. What are you doing to save people’s lives?

This is always a disingenuous argument against protesting. There will always be opportunistic criminals that take advantage of these situations. It’s doesn’t take away the fact that protest and a national strike are the only actual power people have against the ruling class.

I’m not worried about Walmart losing money on looted TVs when cooperations are part of the problem and are run by the ruling class. If it’s a small business, hope your shits insured.

God I hate how much news is just not shown here in the U.S… This and the recent No King protests are really only found in alternative places. I keep trying to explaining that marching isn’t enough, that it doesn’t generate enough fear/anxiety to make them want to change.

That previous “peaceful” protests like MLK’s had targeted strategies that disrupted life on purpose. And still had Malcolm X and the Black Panthers as the muscle of the movement.

We’re just not doing enough, and allies that are willing are just too far apart distance wise to properly coordinate without getting caught. And random acts of violence can be useful, but only if they are actually shocking enough and have follow up. Luigi enacted a small amount of change for a short amount of time. Companies were denying less for a solid year afterwards. The problem is that there wasn’t enough follow up. The violence wasn’t coordinated enough, or organized with a wider group so they could continue to lay on the fear.

We’re just too passive, too domesticated, and lack the will to properly organize. The only good news is Trump is making these points more salient as time goes on. Especially with his talk of interference, and using the national guard for voter intimidation. I believe the mid terms will be a breakpoint for many depending on how they go. Or I hope it will anyway, as nothing else has been enough so far.

I think in the US you would see this if people felt like they were choosing between dying and dying. If it was die in a riot or starve to death or die of exposure for example. Right now it’s suicide by cop or pretend everything is fine. I think if the US didn’t have insane violent thugs in surplus military gear driving armored vehicles as law enforcement you would see a lot more “action”. The math just doesn’t add up if you know acting this way will likely end up with you dying.

Good people dying for a good cause. The US is catatonicly lumbering towards self destruction. One death won’t snap anyone out of it. Alex Pretti proved that. It’ll take hundreds of people slaughtered for the people to wake up. If the government doesn’t bury it like China does with Tiananmen Square.

And if you believe that No Kings was about protesting ICE, then you most likely did not even understand the message you want to transmit to your government

The No Kings protests grew a large number of participants, because US people love to walk around with cardboard signs together with friends. After the protests, everybody went home happy and the next day everything was as if nothing happened.

Just another one believing you are heavily protesting your government while the rest of the world is laughing at you.

Oh I mean, If you wanna go back to BLM where Americans set fire and destroyed several businesses sure. People act like Americans have never destroyed property, the problem is that it wasn’t properly coordinated and people were burning down random fucking businesses rather than actual places that deserve it. All it lead to was food deserts and small businesses shuttering.

Never mind the fact that we could and would absolutely get shot for rolling up on a cop car like this but, sure man. I do love getting my daily reminder from non-US people that I should go outside and get myself killed today.

No, not really, and I mean that genuinely.

There are too many people on here that say shit like “You should firebomb a Walmart” and mean it with their whole heart. We already had that with the Kimberly-Clarke warehouse and we got diaper shortages. Firebombing a Walmart only hurts the locals in the area who won’t get food.

Even with bombing a police station, pray that locals actually care about each other and can respond to emergencies appropriately. I absolutely think police need reform but I’m not gonna sit here and go “I don’t need to call the cops if someone breaks into my house”

Firebombing a billionaires house? Absolutely, it hurts no one else but them (pray that no house workers are in there). Fireboming cop cars when they’re attacking protesters? Sure.

But people are fucking stupid. Luigi shot did nothing to that CEO and that’s great and all, but it didn’t change anything. Now we got a chucklefuck who shot a random pharmacist because “Big Pharma Bad.”

I just think that too many people on here are encouraging senless violence rather than actual, planned, and carefully considerated operations. And i do not want to see innocents get caught up in brash, half-baked bouts of insanity because a person thought they were “helping.”

There are entire communities, districts, and sometimes towns, where police on average poses bigger threat than any criminal ever would. Home invasion scenarios almost never happen, and on a rare occasion they do you can at least fight back. Meanwhile, police routinely enters homes, shoots nondiscriminatory, and if destroy people’s lives for nothing, and you can’t even do shit about it.
And that’s before we talk about when police actually tries to do their job, the fuck they gonna do with your twenty scallywags entering your abode, outline your dead body?

            You should firebomb a Walmart

I spend a lot of time on Lemmy and I haven’t seen a single person say that.

If I ever firebomb anything it will be a data center.

            In Minecraft.

Americans prioritize the flow of treats over any action that might hurt the oligarchy. Even if a warehouse was burned down by an organized revolutionary militia that was actively trying to bring about change, y’all would complain that you can’t get your 10-ply toilet paper.

Not the police, as it is one the most unionized group of public servant workers in France, the biggest police union is called alliance, which is considered to be affiliated with the far right, and their spokespersons go bitching on tv like little crybabies every chance they get. The only group not allowed to unionized in France is historically military personnel, so maybe you’re thinking of the gendarmerie who are military and not cops even if most of what they do is cop things.

Here in Bordeaux they just started gassing the legal movement super heavily, it was 100% peaceful (no shooting stuff or burning or even firecrackers) was moving for only 5 minutes (this is regular stuff, happens often). Old people, handicapped people, parents with strollers. My friend went to them (the riot police) and asked why they started to gas everyone and could they please let them (him) help people out (you get respiratory problems when you’re gassed, and people get disoriented, scared etc, people was on the floor, panicked), he got gassed.

So this seems to be a biig “blunder”, I mean if they don’t just not give a fuck, which they don’t. They don’t listen? Well then it’s french riot time I guess.

China isn’t listed, but we couldn’t get reliable numbers from them anyway. China counts as a “wealthy” nation, no doubt. Also, France isn’t listed.

I suspect the U.S. number is too low, as well. We all know our cops cover for each other and lie constantly.

Before clicking on that link, guess how many people in the US are killed by police each year. Remember, this includes justified/self-defense kills, not just bad shootings. In a large country with an armed populous.

How does the actual number compare to your guess?

          He was 15.

However, regional newspaper La Voix Du Nord quoted a girl, who was reportedly standing near the teenager, as saying he did not pick up the grenade.

“He didn’t pick it up. I was there, I saw it. He didn’t pick it up, he didn’t catch it,” she was quoted as saying.

          And

Last week, Eden, 14, was badly hurt in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône after reportedly being struck in the head by a tear gas grenade.

The student suffered “a double jaw fracture” and had to undergo “extremely major surgery”, according to his lawyer. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has announced an investigation.

Yeah that’s the cops’ version. The students around said that they didn’t pick it up.

Also, even if they did… Are you saying that a kid was at fault for picking up explosives thrown at them? That the only problem in the story, is that he grabbed it, otherwise everything else was fine?

          What the fuck.

That’s because you think a stun grenade’s only job is that it stuns, just like that.

It’s a grenade. It explodes. That’s how it can blow off a hand if it hits one.

It’s a kid. Do you really expect a kid to know what to do when having grenades thrown at them?

They are already fucking smarter than most of the population that just sits on their assss waiting for the world to collapse, but on top of that you expect them to have a proper rational immediate reaction when faced with military equipment?

Also, I repeat: the idea that the kid grabbed the grenade is the cops’ version, which can safely be assumed to be a lie (we’re talking about french cops, who rape a guy that they arrested in their car with their baton, enough to cause internal damage, and their version is that he fell on it. And yes, nothing happened to the cops), so it’s extremely moronic to even debate about the rightfulness of grabbing a grenade in this situation, since it just plays in the narrative of the fascists that try to shut down the protests by all means.

Yup, agreed, same French cops that:

                • Count their self-inflicted injuries as injuries inflicted by their “suspect” (target).
                • Don’t follow most laws and rules about weapon usage, about arrest procedure, about state neutrality, about non-discrimination, rape, etc
                • Cover their violent colleagues up.
                • Threaten a young driver (of color, of course) with “I will blow your head off”, while pointing their gun directly to the target’s head. Then, when the target drives away to flee, the cop successfully shoots to kill. The whole police institution defend the murderer citing a recent law that in effect extend the legitimate cases for the use of (lethal) force by police to “suspect” that would “probably” harm others while fleeing. (preventive defensive violence… reminds me of something). Some people even donated moreqthan a million euros to said cop to pay for his legal proceedings. The murder was filmed, and the video shared day one, disproving the police lies about the murder from the start.
                • Confiscate protests signs that don’t please them enough.
                • Consider police violence and abuses as insignificant, always justified and proportionnate, then treat graffitis and stickers from protesters as violent crimes.
                • Sometimes beat up random people carrying palestinian flags in protests.
                • Throw projectiles (I guess grenades, from the impact sound) from behind the protester lines, probably to trigger their colleagues charge. (And deny doing so when they’re caught red-handed by an elected official.)
                • Are fully armored in protests, get collectively knocked down with some serious injuries by their weapon mishandling, but still use these weapons on civilians in plain clothes, directly aiming at them.
                • etc

Our (french) police intitutions are authoritarian, lethally violent, lying. Our ministers too, since they publicly defend and encourage these intitutions crimes.

The same police already sued the government a few days ago, accusing it of endangering them by giving them confusing orders against the terrifying hordes of evil, violent, uncontrollable kids.

So yeah, if a cop got injured like that they would already be taking out the tanks in the street at this point.

And then they get shocked when things get more violent, yet they’re the ones setting the tone.

              Was the stun grenade required?

If it was not thrown, would it have been there for someone to pick up in an attempt to throw it and protect those around them?

They could…like…just pay teachers more. No stun grenades needed to be used on unarmed civilians.

                  I’m literally adding details.

You’re obfuscating and attempting to only follow a very direct throughline. I’m saying to hold the further removed layers accountable.

What you’re doing is essentially saying that the actions and choices of the wealthy elites and legislators is not violence on us simply because they didn’t pull the trigger themselves.

Wage theft is violence. Healthcare denials are violence. Excessive police force is absolutely violence. And it all could’ve been avoided.

So yes, the officer that threw the grenade is responsible. The chief of police who ordered them to carry such excessive force for unarmed civilians is responsible. The administration of the school who steal wages, overcharge students, and diminish their educations to turn a larger profit are responsible. The legislators and executives who refuse to protect the people and bend to the whims of the wealthy and allow the situation to continue while they often collect more wealth themselves are responsible.

So, kindly, stfu if you’re blaming a person trying to protect others for the insurmountable harm the system puts us all through. Wake the fuck up. The people you’re defending would just as easily throw stun grenades your way without a second thought.

                Again, that’s irrelevant.

I don’t really disagree, this is not a conversation about how police should be armed.

If you’re trying to describe the event, “a cop blew off a students hand” is very obviously a misrepresentation.

You’re welcome to make a case that the cop shouldn’t have been there or shouldn’t have been armed, but “a cop blew off a students hand” does not describe what happened.

I threw a molotov at you, and you didn’t get out of the way correctly. You being on fire is your fault.

              Get fucked.

Well, my being on fire would certainly be my fault if I had tried to pick up the fire.

If a guy sets a building on fire, and a fireman goes inside to save someone but then dies in the flames, you couldn’t say that the first guy burned a fireman alive.

Him, his family, everyone who donated over 10k in the last election to Republicans, anyone who donated to his ballroom fund and anyone he appointed to any government position need to be executed outright.

All this bullshit about reforming/expanding the supreme Court is entirely unnecessary. Nothing that Trump has done is legitimate. Just retcon all of his actions since 2016. His SC judges? Yeah they’re gone, straight to a military tribunal. The next president will get to nominate at least 3 new SC judges, and every case since a Trump nominee hit the court will need to be re-done. Same with his cereal judge nominations. Fox News will lose it’s broadcast license along with other foreign owned media companies that have conspired to subvert our democracy.

If there’s any pushback, open the net. People that donated 5k or more, federal prison. All Republicans house/Senate members? Fucking dead.

If they bitch, open it up more, their kids will have all assets seized, etc.

I don’t think Americans can really throw any shade on anyone about how to protest.

Violent protests would be extremely counterproductive in the US right now. If you really believe otherwise then you need to step away from the Internet for a while, because you are totally delusional.

No it isn’t. You’re just delusional. You think the average French person is sympathetic to violent protests? They are almost always counterproductive.

A false dichotomy is the presentation of a problem as a binary choice, when in fact there’s a variety of solutions.

In this case Americans are doing nothing to prevent the rise of fascism.

You’re claiming that you’re doing nothing because violent protest is counter-productive, and ignoring all of the other solutions.

This is kind of a dumb statement. The French also protested and destroyed a bunch of shit when the government raised the retirement age.

          Guess what happened?

If you guessed the government raised the retirement age you would be right. So what does rioting and destroying a bunch of shit accomplish in France. If you answered nothing much you would be correct.

You have heard of that demonstration, and not of the (LOT of) other one. So it’s a necessary mean. And you may be surprised that it have work in the past. Not always, but CEO whining for the destruction to stop have more chance than union asking politely to not be threaten by their workplaces

It’s not the demonstrators, it’s the usual bunch of idiots that use that excuse to break stuff and pillage shops. It’s become pretty much systematic.

Our police have low end military equipment, that’s about it. Being militarized means not having fat lazy 40-60 year olds on the force, and America sure as shit ain’t there yet.

Our police love the optics of having military gear, but quite frankly they aren’t trained and versed on military tactics, discipline, or a number of other things that would make them effective. That’s why when there’s a real problem like a school shooting or hostage situation they just stand around sucking each other off while wearing body army and holding $1500 AR’s. They’re just security theater. They care about getting easy overtime. They want to go home at the end of the day. They don’t want to die violently. They are paper tigers.

The best part is that when one dies or quits, they have to hire a replacement. It would be fairly easy to create a scenario where a PD NEEDS to hire new officers ASAP, then you flood then with Manchurian applicants. Get your man inside, then you’re golden.

Weird, that perfectly describes the cops in the US.

Oh and militarized just means giving the cops military equipment, mostly armored vehicles and projectile launchers that wouldn’t normally be used in civilian work. Police are civilians, and I think they understand that in France better than anywhere, because you don’t allow them military vehicles and gear to fight the populace. Unfortunately, no other country got the message. We give MRAPS to our thugs with badges. It’s hard to fight back, even when you have pistols, shotguns, and rifles, when the thugs with badges have crowd control weapons. Sonic inhibitors, UV dispersal units, and lethal options like their standard issue AR-15.

I dunno where the fuck you’re from but American cops definitely aren’t fat 40-60 year old slobs. That’s one of the things that is so dangerous about them, they’re young dudes with a chip on their shoulder and shit to prove (and now let just ICE, they’re the bottom of the barrel but they’re hadly an exception)

Now if you’re from a rich community where everyone has gates and private patrols then yeah maybe it’s all fat old cops collecting a check where nothing happens because they roll out the SWAT team when people from “those other neighborhoods” get near, yeah maybe I see where the idea comes from

You can’t speak for the entire US dude. The cops in rural areas definitely are fat 40-60 year old guys. Still got an AR in the trunk tho.
